The document discusses conventions of film openings including introducing characters, narrative, genre, and production company logos. It examines different types of openings such as narrative, discrete title sequences, and stylized openings. It notes that film openings set the mood and tone through music. The document also discusses how the media product's opening follows conventions by including an ident for their fictional production company "Clockwork Pictures" and placing the title in the middle of the opening, mirroring other films.

1. In what ways does your media product
use develop or challenge forms of
conventions of real media products?
Question 1
2. Film Openings
• Conventions of film openings include an opening
introducing the characters, narrative and genre also
an introduction into the production company
features included in the form of an indent. Also the
use of music is key to the genre and a signifier in the
opening as it sets the mood and tone. Film openings
also include a balance of information.
• Titles ,director also cast are included in the film
opening. In the film openings a sense of location and
setting is shown also the narrative.
3. Types of Film Openings
• Narrative Opening – is an opening that introduces
key elements to the story, for example in the
beginning of the shining the narrative opening shows
a long journey.
• An another example is the opening of the film train
spotting where text blocks introduce names and a
monologue informs audience of the character talking
about his attitudes and lifestyle.
• From watching these openings gave me an insight
into what type of film opening and title sequence our
thriller opening would include.
4. Title Sequences
• There are various types of title sequences I analysed each
opening and learnt about the conventions and types of
title sequences that occur in film openings.
• Discrete Title sequence –Seven Sins uses a separate title,
use of props and close up shots leads into a narrative
opening.
• Titles over blank screen-(Donnie Darko Part 1)production
company begins with titles over names also based on a
black screen with use of gothic font choices leads onto a
conventional narrative opening.
• Stylised Opening (Taking of Pelham)-Titles move
across the screen like a train very visual.
5. Production Company
From using the codes and conventions we included an Ident.Within
our media product we devolved our ideas and created our own
Ident called Clock work Pictures to follow the conventions of film
openings from viewing other film openings. This allows our film
opening to conform to conventions creating our film opening to look
like a real media product ready to be distributed.
6. Media Product
• From placing the title after the Ident we attempted to follow
the codes and conventions of film openings placing our title
in the middle we followed a similar convention to the film
Panic Room where the title is also placed in the middle.
