Introduction
 Located at the base of the Cabinet Mountains in Idaho,
Boulder Creek Academy features a state-approved
special education program along with various adventure
activities and leadership opportunities. Designed for
adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18, Boulder
Creek Academy’s program helps teens overcome
challenges such as low self-esteem.
Since self-esteem consists of the opinions and thoughts
you have about yourself, low self-esteem can be
managed. A good place to start improving your self-
esteem is recognizing and reducing the negative things
you say about yourself. Your inner critic can be one of the
biggest things keeping your self-esteem low, so try to
break this habit of negative thinking. Spend time focusing
on the things you do well instead.
Improving Your Self-Esteem
 Every time you start to think negatively, think of your
strengths. Composing a list of good things about yourself
can really help, because it keeps you from having to think
of things off the top of your head.
You may find that you become your biggest critic during
times of failure, but making mistakes is a learning
experience. Consider what went wrong and how to do it
differently in the future instead of dwelling on the
negative. Similarly, judge your success based on the
effort you put forth, rather than on whether a perfect
outcome is attained. Beyond that, you must accept the
things that you cannot change, such as eye color, and
focus on changing what you can, such as eating healthy.
This way, you will feel more in control of yourself.
