Welcome to higher education circa 2012,
where on many campuses, the stale, passive
lecture model is being replaced by a more
dynamic way of teaching and learning—
one in which students and instructors
collaborate in a give-and-take fashion
to “make meaning together,”
- Tony O’Driscoll, a professor of business
administration at Duke.

56. What are the characteristics of
“employability?”
19 December 2015 Zoraini Wati Abas - Sampoerna University 56
According to NGOs and industry
employers, employable graduates are
those who:
are prepared to work,
have the appropriate skills and
competencies, and the ability to
learn and re-learn.
humanitarian values
(honesty, caring, patience) and
socially-desirable attitudes
(open, curious and confident).
57. What are the characteristics of
“employability?”
19 December 2015 Zoraini Wati Abas - Sampoerna University 57
According to employers, employable
graduates are those:
with the following attitudes:
preparedness, positivity, interest,
dedication, team spirit, and readiness
to face challenges and hardship,
work-related competencies such as the
ability to:
• apply theory in the working
environment,
• speak English as well as have strong
communication skills
58. What are the characteristics of
“employability?”
19 December 2015 Zoraini Wati Abas - Sampoerna University 58
Employers also listed qualifications as an
important requirement. . . . but
qualifications were not considered to
be as important as attitude.
For example, as one employer noted, “we
look first at their qualifications
(technical), but their academic
qualification will make up 20 percent and
the rest will depend on their attitude and
adaptability”
. . . . . a high grade point average will not
guarantee employability.
