Grow Minnesota presentation on economic development in the state. Focusing on bettering the business environment, and results of the 2010-2011 year's impact.
The document discusses how the global economic recovery may differ from expectations. It notes that unemployment will remain high between 8-10% through 2010 in the US. Inflation is not expected to be a major issue. Globally, China's recovery faces overheating risks while Europe risks a double-dip recession. The "new normal" will feature restricted credit, wary consumers, a weaker dollar, more government regulation, and higher energy prices.
The document discusses several economic and government policy topics including:
1) The U.S. government spends around $3 trillion per year and runs an annual deficit because spending exceeds taxes and other revenues.
2) Issues like global warming require international solutions because the costs of carbon emissions are not fully accounted for and impact the global environment.
3) People are more comfortable with government spending on manufacturing but uneasy about spending on healthcare and education because the former generates income while the latter only incurs costs.
4) State governments spend the most on administration and education.
Small Business Employment Index - July 2017CBIZ, Inc.
The CBIZ Small Business Employment Index (SBEI), a barometer for small business hiring trends that surveys approximately 4,000 companies employing 300 or fewer people, reported a 2.26 percent decline in July. This comes on the heels of a record-breaking increase in hiring in June.
Minneapolis-St. Paul employment update | December 2016Carolyn Bates
•Minneapolis-St. Paul has the fourth-lowest unemployment rate in the nation among all large metros, according to the most recent BLS estimates.
•Once again, MSP achieved record-breaking employment totals for professional and business services, a fundamental component to the metro’s economic growth. A net total of 8,800 jobs have been added in the industry year-over-year (Y-O-Y).
•While office-using sectors were responsible for 52% of growth this month, educational and health services continue to drive regional employment gains and currently account for 37% of Y-O-Y job growth.
•Nationwide, unemployment dropped by 30bp to a cyclical low of 4.6 percent. This is possible by consistent job growth and a slight decline in the labor force participation rate to 62.7 percent.
•With continued wage growth and inflation now at 1.6 percent, nearing the Federal Reserve’s 2.0-percent target and unemployment at its lowest point since August 2007, the stage has been set for a rate hike by the end of the year.
This summary provides high-level information from a document about notes from the OECD 3rd Annual Conference on the Global Forum on Productivity.
The document discusses:
1) Key points from several speakers about the importance of government policy, including central banking, to a well-functioning economy.
2) The likelihood that disruptive technologies will impact productivity and growth, and that this is "more likely than not" based on several studies cited.
3) The importance of taking a common cause approach to understanding productivity growth trends across countries over time.
This document provides an overview of macroeconomics topics related to unemployment, including different types of unemployment (frictional, seasonal, structural), the natural rate of unemployment, cyclical unemployment, unemployment insurance, minimum wage laws, unions, and efficiency wages. It also defines key terms, provides examples to illustrate concepts, and includes review questions.

What we measure affects what we do; and if our measurements are flawed, decisions may be distorted.
Choices between promoting GDP and protecting the environment may be false choices, once environmental degradation is appropriately included in our measurement of economic performance.
So too, we often draw inferences about what are
good policies by looking at what policies have promoted economic growth; but if our metrics of performance are flawed, so too may be the inferences that we draw.

The document proposes a campaign to merge Vietnam's two lunar new year festivals (Tet) into one in order to reduce economic losses during the long holiday period. The campaign aims to get 10 million people in Vietnam to vote in support of merging Tet within one month. It identifies leaders of capitalist companies and related staff as primary and secondary target audiences to influence. The strategy involves using a viral TV commercial to trigger social discussion about how merging Tet could help realize Vietnam's shared dream of increased prosperity by reducing economic waste from an extended holiday. It would provoke discussion of the issue's relevance to the target audiences and their financial concerns before and after Tet.
Canada’s economy has grown about 2% for the past 16+ years. The Liberals came to office and said they will increase GDP growth as the previous government did little in terms of growing the economy.
Canada’s economy for the next decade or so will be on pace for 2% which is the same level from 2000-2015.
Liberals will add $100B in new debt and have the same growth as the previous government of 2%.

Recovery: Job Growth and Education Requirements Through 2020CEW Georgetown
Recovery: Job Growth and Education Requirements Through 2020: Projections of jobs and education requirements through 2020. This report shows where the jobs will be by education level, occupation and industry. Recovery 2020 is an update to our Help Wanted: Projections of Jobs and Education Requirements Through 2018.
This document summarizes key points from Paul Young's presentation on government policy and household income in Canada in 2016. It includes:
- Job losses forecasted from minimum wage increases range from 50,000 to 185,000 jobs lost.
- Median household incomes grew the most in Nunavut, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, Alberta, and Manitoba from 2005-2015. Income growth was lowest in Quebec and Ontario.
- The presentation discusses trends in household income, low income rates, energy poverty, and taxation policies across Canada.
How Nonprofits Can Use Social Media to Reach Gen YSam Davidson
A very brief overview of Generation Y and how nonprofits can reach them using social media, even when Gen Y is redefining words like "community," "change" and "workplace."
The document summarizes the state of the Minnesota and U.S. economies following the Great Recession. It finds that while the recession officially ended in 2009, recovery has been slow with real GDP growth below 2% through 2011. Job losses were severe, with Minnesota losing 4.3% of jobs since the recession began. Looking forward, challenges include an aging population, slowing labor force growth, rising healthcare costs, and the need to adapt to lower levels of economic growth and consumption in the new normal. Productivity gains through education, innovation and improving outcomes rather than just cost cutting will be important to economic success. Public sector productivity will also be key.
The US GDP grew 2.0% in the third quarter of 2010, according to an initial estimate. Private businesses and consumers contributed to growth, while government spending increased slightly. 151,000 new jobs were added in October, led by gains in professional services and retail. The unemployment rate held steady at 9.6%. Forecasts project continued but moderate economic and job growth over the next year, with the unemployment rate slowly declining.
Business Leaders for Michigan is pleased to provide you with this year’s fact-based assessment of Michigan’s economic competitiveness relative to other states. We compare Michigan’s performance on key output (e.g., employment, personal income) and input (e.g., taxes, education) metrics annually to that of “traditional,” “new economy,” and “Top Ten” benchmark states. These metrics provide multiple reference points to evaluate Michigan’s performance.
The conclusions included in this report are used by Business Leaders for Michigan and policymakers alike to help develop strategies for making Michigan a “Top Ten” state for jobs, personal income, and a healthy economy.
If Michigan were performing like a “Top Ten” state today, there would be:
72,300 more Michigan people working
$9,200 more income per person
$12,300 more GDP per person

Randle Reece presented on the state of the talent acquisition market. Some key points:
- North American employers spent $83 billion in 2015 to find and recruit labor, with $47 billion going to external vendors like staffing agencies and recruiters.
- The talent acquisition market is ripe for disruption, as high-cost segments like temporary staffing, contingent search, and executive search make up a large portion of spending.
- Changes in the labor market over the past 15 years, like slower population growth and an aging workforce, have impacted recruiting needs and made hiring more challenging.
- Online help-wanted advertising peaked around 2007 and has declined since as job boards lost market share to other sources like social media.
This document discusses economic and workforce trends that are impacting the Dan River Region and provides recommendations to help chart a new future. It summarizes key trends such as urbanization, globalization, and changing demographics. It also outlines workforce issues like skills gaps and the rising talent bar. Recent reports on the region emphasize reinventing its image, improving skills, entrepreneurship, and regional collaboration. The document's recommendations are to build leadership infrastructure, define a new vision through strategic planning, and maximize opportunities from changing trends through initiatives like buying local and retiree entrepreneurship.
The South Bend presentation was delivered at the first ever South Bend Economic Summit, co-hosted by the Mayor of South Bend, and the heads of the Chamber of Commerce of St. Joseph County and the Corporate Partnership for Economic Growth.
The document discusses recent economic developments in China and their impact globally. It notes that China's economic growth has slowed significantly in recent years to around 6.5% or potentially lower. This has led the Chinese government to devalue its currency to boost exports. However, the currency devaluation has diminished confidence in China's economy. Emerging markets that trade heavily with China have also been negatively affected. The Chinese stock market has seen significant declines in 2015 and 2016, entering a bear market.
The document summarizes a presentation on New Hampshire's economy given by Steve Norton of the NH Center for Public Policy. It discusses short and long term economic trends in NH including a slower recovery from the recession compared to other states, an aging population that will reduce the labor force, and the important role immigration plays in boosting NH's economy and labor force. It also covers panel discussions on the impact of global market turmoil, labor force challenges, and the need to improve NH's business tax competitiveness to encourage growth.

Small and micro businesses make up the majority of establishments and employment in Boston. They are especially important in industries like real estate, construction, accommodation and food services. The document outlines the importance of these businesses to the local economy and provides data on their distribution and size across industries and neighborhoods. It then presents a framework for understanding the progression from self-employment and micro businesses to small businesses and eventually growth companies. This includes differences in ownership structure, employment size, financial needs, and management requirements at each stage.
The document discusses community-based and entrepreneur-focused economic development strategies. It notes that Virginia has experienced strong but uneven growth, and that entrepreneurs will be key to future success. It advocates for a "ground game" approach involving communities as partners in development. Lessons from initiatives in Kansas emphasize long-term collaboration and community engagement. Building blocks for success include statewide infrastructure and resources paired with local coaching and entrepreneur identification. Assessments help communities craft strategies, and tracking impact is important. Case studies illustrate how some communities have experienced renewal through focused entrepreneur support.

This document discusses key findings from CEOs for Cities about the drivers of the new economy and implications for urban policy. It makes several points:
1) National policy is essentially urban policy as cities are disproportionate drivers of economic output and new economic activity.
2) The economy is now global and regional in nature, so urban policy must consider these larger geographic scales.
3) An efficient regional economy uses all of its assets, including developing a knowledgeable workforce and reducing inequality.
It also examines how factors like education, functional specialization, and immigration contribute to economic growth and the need for cities to build on their unique strengths.

The document summarizes the results of the 2014 statewide policy tour hosted by 16 Minnesota chamber of commerce locations. It provides an overview of the key issues discussed, including concerns about rising taxes and costs, challenges around workforce development and regulations, and a desire for continued reforms in areas like healthcare, transportation, and the business climate. Business owners expressed that recent changes have made it harder to succeed in Minnesota and that longstanding problems remain around areas like permitting, labor costs, and developing a skilled workforce.
Immigrants make up about 7% of Minnesota's population and are an important part of the state and local economy. In Saint Paul specifically, 17.9% of residents are foreign-born. Immigrants fill important roles as workers, entrepreneurs, consumers, and taxpayers. While they have some short-term costs, studies show their long-term economic benefits to Minnesota outweigh these costs. Immigrant contributions include working in sectors with labor shortages, starting small businesses, spending in the local economy, paying taxes, and bringing important skills and networks that support economic growth.

This document summarizes the state of entrepreneurship and innovation in Minnesota. It finds that while Minnesota ranks highly in some business rankings and innovation metrics like patents per capita, its entrepreneurial ecosystem and support for startups has weakened over time according to surveys and comments from local experts. Specifically, the document notes declining new business creation rates, less venture capital funding for early-stage companies, and many new startups leaving Minnesota rather than staying and growing in the state. It calls for action to improve Minnesota's entrepreneurial infrastructure and support for growing home-grown companies.

Say “Thank you”: Talk about the importance of thanking the business for being located in Minnesota. “ Many times when we sit down with the business owner it’s the first time anyone has thanked him/her for being located in Minnesota and it helps set the tone for the conversation.” Ask “About assistance”: More will be discussed on this topic later on in the presentation, but one of the important purposes Grow MN! has been fulfilling is the follow-up assistance that we can provide to companies across the state. Ask “About environment”: Results of the visits are pulled together at the end of our year and turned into an annual report. The results of this report are used at the state capitol to lobby on behalf of businesses and help set the priorities of the MN Chamber. Locally, we use the results at/to… (e.g. city council meetings, member meetings, etc.).
