Editor's Notes
Improvement of Organizational Culture by Aaron Miller
Assignment. I have $5000 with 3 recommendations on how to improve the culture at Kaufman Engineered Systems this year. I will need to explain why these will help and how they will be measured.
Overview. What is organizational culture? Improve orientation and onboarding. Give employee flexibility. And employee appreciation picnic.
First, what is organizational culture? According to Kellie Wong (2020), “Organizational culture is the collection of values, expectations, and practices that guide and inform the actions of all team members. Think of it as the collection of traits that make your company what it is” (para. 3).
My first recommendation would be to improve orientation and the onboarding process at Kaufman Engineered Systems. According to Shane Green (2019), “Almost 30 percent of new employees quit within the first 90 days on the job” (para. 3). Therefore, it is crucial for new hires to be set up for success to ensure they feel connected to the job, team, and company. Recognition through a meet and greet or through a company wide email of the new employee. Executing an organized and effective training program to ensure new hires are trained correctly for their job. This will help by starting a positive sense of belonging and feeling as an important member to the company from the start. Where testing for comprehension and ability will help employees to understand and learn what is being asked of them for their position in the company.
Since recognition of a new hire is contributed to loss of time, no monetary value is lost from my $5000 budget. Also, Kaufman Engineered Systems does have some training programs available for new hires. However, they just need to be updated by management and HR for the current application. This also applies to the testing and assessments which also accrues to loss of time with no monetary value being lost from my budget.
My second recommendation would be to give employees flexibility. Examples are remote work opportunities, flex schedules and open vacation policies. According to Kate Heinz (2019), “Life happens, and knowing they can count on their employer to be understanding and accommodating makes employees feel valued. This leads to higher levels of employee engagement in which positively impact productivity and profitability” (para. 27). This will help employees to feel as Kaufman Engineered Systems is acknowledging that their life outside of work is just as important as their life at work. Which will help achieve a sense of security and openness in the relationship with work and life outside of the company.
Since remote workers can utilize their work computer for remote access, company provided computers for these workers would already be obtained. Also, with the advancement of technology internet access is deemed essential in most US houses, therefore internet is already provided. While flex scheduling and open vacation time only results in loss time at work.
My third recommendation would be an employee appreciation picnic. Company provides food, event tent with tables and chairs. Fun and games such as sports balls and a blow-up obstacle course. Benefits are it boosts morale, rewards hard work, helps rejuvenate motivation and can help the company come together like a family.
Costs for the employee appreciation picnic would be Dickey’s BBQ $3,731.25 for a catered buffet with drinks. Rental of an obstacle course $600. And a rental of a 20ft x 60ft tent w/ tables and chairs is $599.00. Kaufman already owns sports equipment that we could utilize for the event. Everything would total to $4,930.25.
Conclusion. With a $5000 budget I would recommend Kaufman to improve our orientation and onboarding process. Give employee flexibility on remote working and/or scheduling. And lastly providing an employee appreciation picnic.
