Classroom
2000: Glenn Platt, along with his colleague
Maureen Lage, at Miami University, coined
the phrase ”inverted classroom” in a
Business Journal article outlining the
benefits of using technology to move active
learning into the classroom and
lecture outside of class.
3. The Flipped Classroom
2004: Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams
began “flipping” their Chemistry class at
Woodland Park High School in Woodland
Park, Colorado.
6. Benefits of Flipping
• Allows students to learn at their own pace
• Frees up valuable class time for hands-on,
experiential learning
• Increases the amount of one-on-one time
with students and the professor
• Prepares students with lifelong learning
strategies
7. Challenges of Flipping
• Requires a tremendous amount of
preparation time on the part of the professor
• Technical and expertise requirements are
steep (not for video production course)
• Students may “skim” homework (not new)
• Lack of quality resources available
