Companies are relocating manufacturing and sourcing to regions with lower labour costs to stay competitive. This affects the efficiency of warehousing and distribution. But which elements, in particular, will be strategically important in the next two years?
Markets are changing – as are customer and service requirements. You may have implemented a new manufacturing and supply chain setup, but customers are asking for more frequent and faster deliveries.
The key to staying competitive is how quickly you can get your products from the warehouse to your customers. This can challenge your operations and calls for a review of your warehouse and distribution setup.
We asked our international clients which themes, within warehousing and distribution, they believe will have the most strategic relevance within the next two years. Here are the top five.

. Understand Supply Chain Dynamics:
Gain a comprehensive understanding of the entire supply chain, including procurement, production, logistics, and distribution. Recognize how different stages of the supply chain may influence demand.
2. Collaborate with Stakeholders:
Involve key stakeholders from different departments such as sales, marketing, production, and logistics. Their insights and expertise will provide valuable information for accurate forecasting.
3. Data Integration:
Integrate data from various sources within the supply chain, including historical sales data, inventory levels, supplier performance, and external factors such as market trends or economic indicators.
4. Demand Segmentation:
Segment your products or services based on characteristics that affect demand, such as seasonality, product life cycle, or customer demographics. Differentiated forecasting methods may be applied to each segment.

Account for lead times in the supply chain when forecasting. Understand the variability in lead times and demand patterns to optimize inventory levels and reduce the risk of stockouts or overstocking.
7. Dynamic Models for Supply Chain Events:
Design dynamic forecasting models that can adapt to sudden events in the supply chain, such as disruptions in the supply network, changes in supplier capabilities, or unexpected demand fluctuations.
8. Demand Shaping Strategies:
Implement demand shaping strategies to influence customer demand positively. This may involve promotions, discounts, or other marketing initiatives to align with forecasted demand.
9. Risk Assessment:
Incorporate risk assessments into the forecasting process. Identify potential risks and uncertainties in the supply chain, such as geopolitical issues, natural disasters, or supplier reliability, and develop contingency plans.
10. Real-time Visibility:
Aim for real-time visibility into supply chain activities. Use technologies like IoT devices, RFID, and advanced analytics to monitor the movement of goods, track inventory levels, and gather real-time data for more accurate forecasting.
11. Performance Metrics:
Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the accuracy and effectiveness of the forecasting system. Regularly assess forecast accuracy, bias, and other relevant metrics to identify areas for improvement.
12. Continuous Improvement:
Emphasize a culture of continuous improvement. Regularly review and update forecasting models based on changing market conditions, technology advancements, and feedback from actual performance.

Consider sustainability factors in forecasting, such as the environmental impact of production and transportation.

The purpose of this unit 1 discussion board 2 assignment will be to examine and explain the term supply chain and how it is used to form or create a successful supply chain strategy or plan. Supply chain is recognized or identified as an organizational scheme or structure, activities, resources, people and information involved in transporting merchandise or services from the supplier to the consumer. Activities of any supply chain will be comprised of transforming raw materials, components and natural resources into finished product or goods which is then delivered to the client or consumer. A common supply chain begins with biological, political and ecological regulations or guidelines of natural resources, superseded by the extraction or removal of raw materials which include considerable links of production such as; assembly, merging and component fabrication or construction. These series of processes play a significant role when trying to move or relocate storage facilities of decreased size and increased remote locations within certain geographical regions that still make it possible for both goods and services able to reach the client or customer (Grant, Trautrims, & Wong, 2015).
The supply chain system or strategy is an established network between both the organization and their suppliers in an attempt to manufacture and distribute specific merchandise or product. The supply chain process or method consist of a procedure necessary for ensuring that the goods and services are conveyed to the consumer. On another note there is what is known as business logistics which refers to and describes this method as the manufacturing and distribution procedures within a company or business, however, the supply chain method includes and focuses on retailers, suppliers and manufacturers that distribute the merchandise to the consumer (Anklesaria, 2008).
The capabilities of a well planned and implemented supply chain strategy is guided and driven by a series of supply chain drivers. These drivers can be managed and developed to affirm efficiency or understanding in regards to changes or modifications to the requirements of a business. Supply chain drivers permit for useful framework or structure as they relate to the capabilities of the supply chain strategy or scheme (Mentzer, 2004). Listed below are drivers that are vital to the supply chain process.
Production - The purpose of this driver relates to the building or constructing of facilities with an excessive amount of capacity and utilization of adjustable manufacturing skills necessary in producing wide array of items.

KEY ELEMENTS OF SUPPLY CHAIN STRATEGY
A supply chain strategy involves many interlocking activities and decisions, large and small. According
to Michael Porter, strategy guru and author of Competitive Advantage, successful business strategy relies
on the concept of “fit”—that is, a group of activities that support a chosen competitive strategy.
Although any single activity can be copied, the activities taken together form a system that is virtually
impossible to duplicate.9
Porter’s concept of fitness holds equally true for supply chain strategy. Five elements of your
business—and the choices you make regarding these elements—are fundamental:
Customer service. What are your objectives in terms of delivery speed, accuracy, and
flexibility?
Sales channels. How will your customers order and receive your goods and services?
Value system. Which supply chain activities will be performed by your organization and which
by your partners?
Operating model. How will you organize the planning, ordering, production, and delivery
processes to provide customer service while still meeting your working capital and cost
objectives?
Asset footprint. Where will you locate your supply chain resources, and what is their scope of
action?
Companies often make decisions about each of these elements in isolation, without considering the
others. It’s possible, for example, to develop a manufacturing footprint that reduces costs, only to fall
short of required customer-service levels. To get the full strategic benefit a supply chain can offer,
however, it’s critical to treat each element as part of an integrated whole (Figure 1.2).

The first step in developing a supply chain strategy is to define customer service objectives. Offering
various levels of delivery speed, accuracy, and flexibility for different types of customers can help
distinguish the overall customer experience. Should, for example, deliveries reach all customers in the
same amount of time, or should customers who are more valuable receive deliveries faster? Should the
ordering process be the same for all customers? Answers to questions like these will be dictated by your
company’s business strategy and target audience—that is, whether you are addressing B2C or B2B
segments.

convoluted networks.

One organisation does not have to own a
supply chain to get the benefits of integration.
Suppliers and customers can get mutual benefits
by working together, typically in a strategic
alliance.

A similar arrangement can cover a whole
range of services,such as:
-electricity supply,banking service and office
cleaning

has a specialised company looking after all
of an organisation’s transport.
This arrangement has the advantages of an
efficient and experienced specialist to look
after the transport, while the organisation can
concentrate on its core operations.

purchase of materials, materials handling,
and many of the other functions of logistics.
When one company uses other companies to
run its logistics, it is called third party or
contract logistics.
The use of third party logistics is a special
type of ‘make-or-buy’ decision

Lower fixed costs, with customers only paying for services
they use
Specialist suppliers who have expertise and use the best
systems and practices
Suppliers can combine work from several customers to get
economies of scale
Guaranteed high, and agreed, levels of customer service
Flexible capacity, dealing effectively with peaks and
troughs in demand
Lower exposure to risk from, say, varying demand
Increased geographical coverage and local knowledge
A convenient way of entering new markets

Because each of the economies has developed differently,
and different logistics requirements, the use of third parties
varies quite widely.
Germany, France and the UK each spend about $10
billion a year on third party logistics(grow at 8%)
But growth will be faster in Italy and Spain but low levels of
outsourcing.

Enabling practices are the activities
associated with the supply chain that allow it
to work efficiently
For example; reliable information processing
is an enabling practice that allows logistics to
function properly
51. Organisation has designed the structure of
its supply chain, and found the best locations
for facilities
For example; use just-in-time methods to
reduce stocks, EDI (Electronic Data
Interchange) to link with partners, or
procurement via websites
52. The idea of the enabling practices as
supporters of logistics can be important
If we look at ; series of organisations in the
same business → envolved in similar ways
(whisky distillers or detergent manufacturers)
53. Capacity
The capacity of a supply chain is the largest
amount of materials that can flow through it in a
given time.
(lorry→25 tonnes, airline→450 passengers etc.)
54. Bottleneck → not all parts of a chain have the
same capacity, so the overall capacity is set by
the part with the smallest individual capacity
If wholesaling forms the bottleneck with a
capacity of 200 units of a product an hour, this
sets the capacity of the whole supply chain –
even if other parts have a much higher capacity
55. The only way of increasing the capacity of the
supply chain is to increase the capacity of the
bottleneck; adding more resources elsewhere
has no effect, it only increases the amount of
spare facilities and reduces the utilisation.

To get a smooth flow of materials through the
supply chain, we have to make sure that each
part has an appropriate capacity. This means
that the overall capacity matches total demand,
and the capacity of each part is matched, so
that there are no restrictive bottlenecks

Until 1998 RES ran two warehouses within the Czech
Republic
-The first was a bonded warehouse used to store imported
materials-second warehouse was a ‘sales warehouse’ run
by RES on its main site
Two other trucking companies were involved in export and
import operations.The sales warehouse was about three
times the size of the bonded warehouse
59. This structure had a number of weaknesses:
The sales warehouse was leased from a
competitor of RES.It was not appropriate to store
finished goods in a competitor’s facilities.
The sales warehouse had become too small
The sales warehouse had poor arrangements for
loading and unloading trucks
All goods imported into the Czech republic were
sent to the bonded warehouse, moved by weekly
Local distributors charged high rates for each
truck load delivered.
60. Their solution was to outsource logistics
to a third party.
RES effectively closed its sales warehouse,
and moved these activities to the new
operator.

Saving overhead costs of management in the
warehouse
Extending opening times from 0700 to 1900
Removing the conflict of interest with a competitor-
