A social network is defined as a chain of
individuals and their personal connections.
Expanding one’s connections with other people is
a technique that can be used both for personal or
business reasons. Social networking applications
make use of the associations between individuals
to further facilitate the creation of new
connections with other people. This could be
used to meet new friends and connect with old
ones, as many people do on Facebook, or to
expand one’s professional connections through a
business network like LinkedIn.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

3. What is social networking?
A social network is a map of the relationships between
individuals, ranging from casual acquaintance to close
familial bonds.
Social networking is possible in person, especially in the
workplace, universities, and high schools but it is most
popular online.
Websites that facilitates social networking online are called
Social Networking Sites (SNS).
5. Some statistics
According to the Nielsen Company, the global average time
spent per person on social networking sites is now nearly
five and half hours per month, with Facebook accounting
for the majority of that time.
Nielsen measured social network usage per person across
10 countries. (statistics 6 months before)
6. Some statistics
Facebook is the number-one social network destination
worldwide and accounts for nearly six hours (5:52:00) per
person with the average user logging in more than 19 times
per month.
What that boils down to is that the time spent on Facebook
is almost five hours longer than the time spent
on MySpace(0:59:33), the second closest social network in
terms of time spent on site per person.
7. Some statistics
Globally, the average Twitterer conducts three unique
sessions for a total of 36 minutes per month.
In the U.S. the active unique social network audience grew
roughly 29% from 115 million in February 2009 to 149
million in February 2010.
Active unique users of social networks are also up nearly
30% globally, rising from 244.2 million to 314.5 million
collectively.
11. FB User statistics (INDIA)
Users: 43 497 980
Position in the list: 2.
Growth in (6 mnths): 10 828 860
Penetration: 3.71%
12. Advantages
Low Costs: It's cheaper to use online social networking for
both personal and business use because most of it is usually
free.
Builds Credibility: You definitely can gain the customers'
confidence if you can connect to them on both a personal
and professional level.
Connections: By using a social networking site, you can do
what you can and get connected with these people to form a
web of connections that can give you leverage if you play
your cards right.
13. Advantages
Opportunities to find jobs: If you keep an eye on adverts
you have the probability of getting a good job.
Promote your site or business: You can promote your
business by making business pages.
14. Disadvantages
Lack of Anonymity: You are putting out information
about your name, location, age, gender, and many other
types of information that you may not want to let others
know.
Scams and Harassment: There is a potential for failure of
security in both personal and business context
Impersonation: Others may be impersonating you
Time Consuming: If this is not your kind of thing, that it
would just be a waste of time for you. If you are not cashing
the advantages then think twice before login.
15. Reasons for getting into it
The advantages stated in earlier slides are only the reasons after
you join the SNS
Technological advancements
Easy Internet
People are becoming IT aware
More user’s aware of using Internet
Other than using to increase performance by improving task
management computer users tend to browse Internet.
Reason: its easier to click tempting links
Easy and handy gadgets became available – touchphone’s etc.
It is becoming a shame not having an account in SNS
16. Reasons for getting into it
Many sites are integrating SNS sign in to validate
registration to their sites.
The diverse the nature of registration to different SNS, the
more you require to create accounts in different SNS.
You friend circle varies from different SNS, so you end up
opening account everywhere.
Your friend requested you to join. MY FRIEND
REQUESTED ME. MY DEAR GOOD FRIEND!!
17. How to know you are addicted
When you type the first alphabet the url of the sns pops
out. (if caching is enabled).
The first website you hit into is not your email, but
facebook, twitter or myspace.
If you have started stalking - unwanted attention by
individuals (and sometimes groups of people) to others.
Friend updated his status. Lets see who commented.
You keep the cell phone in your reach.
You have Internet connection at your home, but your
mobile GPRS data charges are increasing.
18. How to manage and use it.
No strict rules as such.
You can block the site
Application within an organization
But its not practical always (it also aids in communication)
Limit bandwidth usage.
But what to do for home use?
I am the master of my own machine – so be self conscious.
Apply security settings and time of day for your children when
they use the computers.
19. Some way outs
Google chrome extension Chrome Nanny.
With this extension you can specify the time of day you want
to block a website and the days of a week you want to block it.
You can also pinpoint the maximum time you want to
spend on the website in a day in the hours it is not blocked.
This makes it good so that you are reminded that you spent
say 30 minutes on Facebook today and its enough for today.
20. Some way outs
Firefox has a similar extension, Leech block that works in a
similar manner.
If you try to access blocked site in the given time or after you
crossed the time limit for the day it shows you a white
page with some text on the homepage of the site you are
looking for.
Also look into minutesplease.com, which also helps you
restrict the usage after the specified minutes.
21. Conclusion
Having a SNS profile is not a matter of pride. Take it as a
feature of the web world. Use wisely.
Limit your personal information.
Use one-to-one email for communication.
Make closed groups for communication.
Refer to the privacy policy of the SNS you are using.
