Television's Impact on Kids

Television is one of the most prevalent media influences in
kids' lives. According to Kids' Take on Media, a survey
conducted in 2003 by the Canadian Teachers’ Federation,
watching TV is a daily pastime for 75 percent of Canadian
children, both boys and girls from Grade 3 to Grade 10.
How much impact
TV has on children
depends on many
factors: how much
they watch, their age
and personality,
whether they watch
alone or with adults,
and whether their
parents talk with
them about what they
see on TV.
To minimize the potential negative effects of
television, it's important to understand what the
impact of television can be on children. Below
you will find information on some areas of
concern.
Violence

Over the past two decades, hundreds of studies
have examined how violent programming on TV
affects children and young people. While a direct
"cause and effect" link is difficult to establish,
there is a growing consensus that some children
may be vulnerable to violent images and
messages.
By age 18, the average American child sees 200,000 violent
acts on TV.
By age 18, children witnesses almost 20,000 murders on TV
— most by handguns.
73% of the time the people in TV dramas who commit
violent acts go unpunished.
47% percent of violent situations show no real harm to the
victims, and 58 percent show no real pain.
Only 4 percent of violent programs show nonviolent
alternatives to solve programs.
80% of Hollywood executives think there is a link between
TV violence and real-life violence.
Increased fear—also known as the
"mean and scary world" syndrome

Increased aggressive behaviour

Desensitization to real-life violence
Sexual content

Kids today are bombarded with sexual messages and images in
all media—television,
While television can be a powerful tool for educating young
people about the responsibilities and risks of sexual behaviour,
such issues are seldom mentioned or dealt with in a meaningful
way in programs containing sexual content.
According to a 2001 study from the Kaiser Family Foundation,
entitled Sex on TV, three out of four prime time shows contain
sexual references. Situation comedies top the list: 84 per cent
contain sexual content.
TV and Obesity

During Saturday morning cartoons there are typically more
than 200 "junk- food" commercials.

At least 12 medical studies link excessive television watching
to increasing rates of obesity.

In 1963, 4.5% of children ages 6 to 11 were seriously
overweight; by 2009, this percentage had more than tripled.
TV and Commercials
Horror
It is especially appealing to adolescents, because
they are in a period of life when they are
striving for mastery over their emotions.
Overcoming terror and revulsion makes them
feel strong and grown-up.
The media desensitize them to horror,
making them more callous to evil and
its consequences. The result is that
they will find it easier to bring
horror, or at least pain and sorrow,
into the lives of other people.
The Cult of Beauty
       In the effort to attract
       viewers and sell products,
       television and the other
       visual media constantly offer
a gallery of the world's most
       beautiful people. A modern
       man sees more world-class
female beauty in a single day
than his forefathers saw in a
       lifetime.
As a result of the media's
relentless campaign to
promote body
consciousness, people
today are more obsessed
with beauty than ever
before.
Reality television is a genre
of television programming
that presents unscripted
dramatic or humorous
situations, documents actual
events, and usually features
ordinary people instead of
professional actors,
sometimes in a contest or
other situation where a prize
is awarded.
The impact of reality television on the television
industry has been that of a low-cost way to tell
entertaining stories and get big audiences, it has
forced scripted television, to become more
creative
It is the only College in the University without the

student units of the political organizations like SFI,

KSU and ABVP. No strike was held in the campus,

though all the other colleges in the University had
the

problem.
