In order to ascertain water quality for human consumption, physico-chemical and bacteriological
analyses were evaluated in 160 tube-wells (40 shallow and,1.20 deep tube-wells) to investlgate
the quality of water. The study was conducted in drinking water sources from different locations
of 26 slums in Khulna City Corporation (KCC), Bangladesh. The samples were analyzed to
determine water quality parameters: pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Total Hardness, Total
Dssolved Solids (TDS), Chloride, Arsenic (As), Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), Fecal Coliforrr
(FC) and Total Coliform (TC) according to APHA standard methods (ApFiA, iOtzl. The metals
(As, Fe and Mn) contents in drinking water samples were measured by the atomic absorptim
spectrophotorneter (AAS, Model: Varian-AA22O). Mombrane filtration technique *a, ,sid to
enumerate Fecal Coliform (FC) and Total Coliform ffC) bacteria in water. The data showed a
large variation of the investigated parameters in drinking water samples as follows: pH 7.13 to
9.91, Electrical Conductivity (EC) 211 to 4580 pS/cm, Hardness 61 t; g10 mg/Las CaCOr, TDS
97 to 2382 mg/L, Chloride 19 to l49O mg/L, As < 0.0005mg1L to 0.052 m;lL, Fe 0.01 to 1.46
mglL and Mn 0.01 to 0.4 m{L. As the investigated area located at coastal region, the resul6
showed higher values of pH, EC, TDS, Hardness and Chloride. In addition, a large variation of
Fe and Mn content in the investigated ground water may be due to the presence of differeffi
amount of ores (mainly Mn enriched iron pyrites) and/or minerals present in ground aquifers
The 55 out of i60 tube-wells found to be highly contaminated with pC anA 74 outof l6O found
to be contaminated with TC. Frorr our investigations it has been found that location of latring
dustbin, drain and sewerage line near tube wells are more likely the reason of contamination of
tube-well water with both FC and TC.
