The document discusses various ways that image and text can be combined to communicate effectively. It provides examples of Egyptian hieroglyphics and Mayan glyphs that mix symbols and characters. Illuminated manuscripts also combined images and words. The combination of image and text can reinforce meaning and ensure the artist's intentions are clear. The order of image and text can also influence how information is interpreted. When used together, image and text provide an easy way to explain and help people remember information.

2. Egyptian hieroglyphics and Mayan glyphs
communicate meaning through a mix of
symbols. These are known as ‘codices’ that
are often a combination of images and
characters.
4. "Pictures speak louder than
words".
• Is this true? Consider ways of visually
expressing a thought, an emotion or reaction.
What is the most effective way of
communicating and expressing such a
sentiment?
The visual image can deliver a message directly
and yet can also be open to interpretation, as
indeed can words.
• The combination of the two can enforce the
meaning and make certain an artist's intentions.
5. IMAGE BEFORE TEXT
• When you add an image to a text, or text to an
image, what effect does it have? How is your
thinking changed by which comes first?
• Consider the picture that you are about
to see (before seeing the text) and think of
words that you would associate with the image.
• Then write down some suitable text, in no more
than ten words, that you feel is relevant.
6.
7. This was going to be the end!
I had lost all hope and energy; I was giving
up.
I had been fading fast, knowing that this time
there was nobody around to save me.
I could see that the end was coming very
soon - there was nothing I could do to stop it!
At any moment, I knew my life was going
to be over. My human flesh would slowly
rot away and no-one would know where I was.
8. TEXT BEFORE IMAGE
• Now, do the opposite and consider the text
that you are about to see (before looking at
the image) and ‘visualise’ what you
associate with the words.
• Write a brief explanation (or as a list of key
words) that ‘literally’ interprets what you
picture in your mind. Sketch some ideas next
to your text related to your response.
9. This was a real nightmare!
Eyes were watching me – all the time!
It was as if they were inside me,
observing everything that I did,
looking to see everywhere I went,
and curious to see how I reacted!
As soon as I opened my mouth, all eyes
stared even harder at me - waiting to see
what was going to happen next!
They never left me alone!
10.
11. THE POWER OF
IMAGE AND TEXT
COMMUNICATING TOGETHER
When looking at the next picture,
that has words in the middle of it,
think about what message the artist
is conveying to you as the onlooker.
12.
13. Running Fast And Fading Away
I reached up to a sunless sky
Huge dark clouds rapidly formed
Torrents of rain began to fall
Drenching me in pain
As I mourned.
Carried away by darkened fears
That gut-clutching panic feeling
inside
Helplessly feeling as if
I were bleeding from every pore
Not wanting to face anything
anymore.
Poem: Ann Monroe
14. THE SUREST WAY TO COMMUNICATE
SIMPLY IS BY USING IMAGE AND TEXT
• How did you learn your own language?
• A mix of words and images help explain
things easily to the learner. For example;
• A is for Apple, B is for Ball and C is for Cat;
• The visual recording of image and text
together helps us remember them both.
27. "Calligraphy may be appreciated in much the same
way as abstract art," Hearn says, stressing that
while an understanding of Chinese certainly helps
at times, many of the works were meant to be
admired much as abstract art.
28. PURPOSE OF TEXT AND IMAGE
• There are many reasons for combining
these together, for example;
• Advertising – such as tourism and events
• Propaganda – as for political (anti-war)
and for social reasons - health campaigns
- environmental reasons
