iBeacon and IoT: Where We're At, Where We're GoingDoug Thompson
iBeacon and Bluetooth LE technology has seen rapid adoption since Apple announced support last summer. This presentation at the IoT Waterloo meet-up summarizes a few of the key success factors, myths and questions surrounding iBeacon and Bluetooth LE deployment.
iBeacon and Bluetooth LE: An Introduction Doug Thompson
Bluetooth LE and Apple iBeacon technology will change the way consumers experience the world. In this overview, we explain what a 'beacon' is, why it's important, and why there's a big difference between proximity and location.
Whether you're a brand, a venue or a small retailer, you should know about Bluetooth LE and how it will change the way consumers will experience the world.

iBeacons are small devices that transmit data via Bluetooth Low Energy. iOS devices can detect these signals as well as transmit data as iBeacons. When within range of an iBeacon, events like push notifications and server calls can be triggered inside apps.
As mobile marketers and developers, iBeacon technology presents us an incredible opportunity to build sophisticated, proximity based apps for clients and for distribution on the App Store.
In this talk, we’ll explore:
1. What are iBeacons and BLE?
2. How to detect iBeacons inside your apps
3. How to make your iOS device act as an iBeacon
4. Potential applications / Apps using iBeacon
At space150, we work at the intersection of physical and digital; connecting the touchpoints of a brand's experience, from its physical presence to online channels. A popular technology in this space right now is Apple's iBeacon. As we've started several iBeacon projects with our partners and potential partners, we’ve done our research, created a simple way to think about iBeacon, and wanted to share it.
Beacon is a low-cost piece of hardware — small enough to attach to a wall or countertop that use battery-friendly, low-energy Bluetooth connections to transmit messages or
prompts directly to a smartphone or tablet. In short, a new thing in technology
Beacons leverage a common wireless standard that can be detected by nearly every modern smartphone. Because of this wide and wireless coverage, concerns have been raised on the security of beacons.
By default, Beacons are open and static. For example, Apple’s iBeacons constantly broadcast a single repeating payload: UUID, Major ID and Minor ID. Once deployed, anyone can detect these Beacon IDs. This gives rise to two specific risks: Beacon Spoofing & Piggybacking.
This doc is a summary of the risks and general controls available to mitigate attacks.
For instance, a beacon can label a bus stop so your phone knows to have your ticket ready, or a museum app can provide background on the exhibit you’re standing in front of.
Introduction
Beacons are small wireless devices that broadcast signals using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), or Bluetooth SMART technology. Mobile apps on compatible devices are able to listen for signals from beacons placed in the physical world and then trigger an experience via the app.
Beacon enabled apps are notified when the device enters or exits the range of a beacon, and are also able to monitor the distance from the beacon as it changes, often referred to as 'ranging'.
Bluetooth Low Energy
BLE or Bluetooth Smart is an intelligent and power friendly version of Bluetooth wireless technology and exchanges data over short distances using radio transmissions. The power of BLE is in its ability to work with an app on a smartphone, tablet or any other compatible mobile device.
The Beacon System
The Beacon system from Apple can be broken down into two parts:
• A piece of hardware – the “Beacon”, which constantly broadcasts a Bluetooth Low Energy signal. This transmits a unique identifier (UUID) and two further identifiers; major and minor (unsigned 16 bit integer values), which can be used to identify the beacon.
• Application Programmable Interface (API) - An API to search for beacons with a certain UUID and optionally a specific major and minor value. iBeacon adds the possibility for the developer to subscribe to beacons like you would subscribe to geolocations. This enables the app to get notifications (whether the app is currently running or not) when the user gets within range of a specific beacon.
Importance
• High degree of accuracy
• Low impact on battery life
• Low cost of entry
• No Internet connection required
Security
Some of the most common beacon security myths:
• Beacons are transmitting personal data:
Beacons don’t transmit any personal data. In fact, beacons don’t receive any data at all.
• Beacons are tracking my location:
Beacons can’t track your location. The only thing they can do is let your mobile device know that you’re nearby.
Compatibility
Beacons work with both Android and iOS. They were initially introduced in iOS7 and are compatible with every Android version > 4.3
This puts beacon functionality in 300 million + devices.
Conclusion
Beacons transmit a low energy signal from a device with a radius of 0-50 meters to broadcast static pieces of data within short distances.
In a nutshell, our basic requirements for an operational beacon are:
1. Beacon enabled mobile app
2. Network of deployed beacons
3. Bluetooth switched on and relevant permissions
Without a doubt, the Beacon is a useful convergence device that can be given a shot at, which is for sure a revolution in technology

Building the world’s biggest iBeacon living lab with WSO2Yenlo
The city of Amsterdam, together with Yenlo and partners, is building the biggest iBeacon Living Lab with the help of WSO2 products. Beacons are small radio devices that send out a bluetooth signal that can be picked up by nearby smartphones. As part of the smart city initiative, these beacons will literally become part of the city. First, the iBeacon Mile (slightly longer than 3.4km), consisting of 60 beacon installations, will be built from the central station of Amsterdam to the Scheepvaartmuseum. Within a year there will be almost 3000 beacons throughout the city of Amsterdam.
Beacons allow for a much more precise determination of location (from 80 or so meters to less than 50 centimetres) enabling a new level of location based services both indoors and outdoors. Through this, navigation, hyper local advertising, couponing, showing historic content about monuments and many other services become a reality.
In order to make this possible we are creating a solution with WSO2 products to open up the beacons to developers by offering a set of public APIs. In this webinar we will discuss:
The iBeacon Mile project
How we open up a public set of APIs to developers using
WSO2 API Manager

Beacons are BLE devices that can be placed throughoutany
‘target’ area that emit a signal that can be detected by other
BLE enabled devices.
Depending on the beacon device and how frequently it sends
out a signal, the battery life can last for a year or longer.
Certain mobile devices themselves can also act as a beacon

WHAT IS iBEACON?
15
iBeacon is NOT an actual physical device—iBeacon is the software.
There is no such device called an iBeacon at this time. iBeacon is the software, the
physical device is just any BLE device that is configuredin a particular way so it’s
recognized by the iOS as an iBeacon.
When an app is iBeacon enabled it just means that it has announcedto the core
iOS that it needs to be consulted if the device detects a BLE device emitting a
specific BLE advertising signal.
iBeacon is Part of the Apple iOS Operating System
@Vectorform @ailjaitsch #Beacons #BLE
16. BLE / Beacons / iBeacon
WHAT IS iBEACON?
16
iBeacon is part of the core iOS Location Services.
The developer sets three specific properties: The UUID, Major, & Minor
Properties
The UUID property contains the identifier that you use to identify your company’s
beacons. You typically generate only one UUID for your company’sbeacons but
can generate more as needed.
The Majorproperty is typically goingto be the specific store or general location.
The Minor property would then identify a specific location within a store or area.

WHY IS iBEACON IMPORTANT?
Before iBeacon
An app would need to be
running in the foreground or
backgroundto communicate
with a BLE device.
After iBeacon
An app can be launchedinto
the backgroundby iOS if a
specific BLE device is
recognized.
