Presented at Sensors Expo 2016 in San Jose by Mark Benson on June 13th, 2016.
ABSTRACT: A recent report by Forrester says more than 4 in 5 manufacturers say IoT will be the most strategic and important technology initiative this decade. With the emergence of smart connected products, it is becoming even more important to integrate the data from those products with enterprise IT. Because the IoT is an emerging digital ecosystem, it requires a integrative platform approach that meets near term needs yet is flexible enough to meet the long-term demands of the future. This presentation examines leading trends in modern IoT platform design and recommendations for building a lasting connected product foundation.

Developing a Future-Proof IoT Roadmap for Connected Devices and DataMark Benson
Presented at Sensors Expo 2016 in San Jose by Mark Benson on June 12th, 2016.
ABSTRACT: IoT device fleets are becoming more pervasive. As devices are becoming connected to the Internet, new possibilities for how to use the data are opening up. For any IoT solution, there are steps of maturity that occur in sequence: (1) connected, (2) managed, and (3) optimized. Data analytics maturity mirrors these three steps: (1) when devices are connected we can get some descriptive data about them; (2) when devices are managed, we can generate predictive analytics on them to figure out what might happen in the future such as with a motor failure; and (3) we can optimize devices and user interactions by using prescriptive analytics to provide closed loop feedback. This article lays out the foundations of data analytics and data science for IoT device deployments as well as recommendations for making an IoT roadmap future-proof.

Business Analytics and the Internet of ThingsMark Benson
Presented at Vantage Advanced Professional Studies, Minnetonka by Mark Benson on May 11th, 2016.
ABSTRACT: The Internet of Things represents a new twist on the profession of business analytics. With the advent of smart and connected devices, new types of data are becoming available that enable business analysts to gain deep insight into not only how a business operates internally, but how its machines operate in the world, how they are distributed and sold, and how they are used by people. This presentation has three parts: (1) introduction to the Internet of Things for business analysts, (2) three case studies that show how business analysis is used in action on Internet of Things projects, and (3) perspectives on the future of business analytics as we live in an increasingly connected world.
The Internet of Things (IoT), is defined as the network of physical objects—devices, vehicles, buildings and other items—embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity that enables these objects to collect and exchange data.

ABSTRACT: There is an epic battle going on right now between disruptive innovation and an immovable object. The disruptive innovation is emerging connectivity technology and service-based business models that are changing the way that consumers interact with their devices, their environments, and their data. The immovable object is the inability of large organizations to successfully make the changes necessary to become a progressive data-driven company that listens to its users. Here, a contrasting set of successful and non-successful case studies are shown along with recommendations as to how companies can make the difficult changes ahead in order to compete and compete well in our emerging digital economy.
Building Sticky Brand Loyalty with a Connected Product StrategyMark Benson
Presented at IoT Evolution 2016 in Las Vegas by Mark Benson on January 27th, 2016.
ABSTRACT: The stickiness of a connected product brand is a combination of user experience UX relevance and the degree to which the product garners trust. As such, the product design process should carefully consider the UX to ensure that product features and usage modes are relevant, easy to understand, and enjoyable to use. By looking at a case study of an award-winning smart device enabled garage door controller by Genie called the Aladdin Connect as an illustration, we’ll examine how connected products are (A) becoming the new normal for consumers, (B) closing the intimacy gap between OEMs and consumers, and (C) enabling competitive interoperability in a way that is changing the competitive landscape and influencing consumer buying decisions.

Presented at Sensors Midwest Industrial IoT University by Mark Benson on September 26th, 2016.
ABSTRACT: Although a staggering amount of information is beginning to be gathered every day from IoT connected products, the companies that have access to it are not necessarily using that data effectively. As Tim Hartford of the Financial Times notes, “Big data has arrived, but big insights have not.” Useful data analysis requires much more than the simple collection and summary of data. Companies must have a long-term IoT analytics strategy in place to provide significant, actionable insights that will fuel their business transformation into a connected product company. This presentation covers IoT analytics industry trends and advocates for a phased maturity model approach for creating a smart IoT strategy that starts with basic data collection and stream analytics, moves through descriptive/diagnostic analytics, and culminates in predictive/prescriptive analytics. This presentation ends with practical tips and architectural tradeoffs for creating a future-proof IoT roadmap based on connected devices and data.

IoT in a context. Traditional IT and industrial IT are melting, DYI, 3D printing and more are taking us from a prognosis driven realito to a much mure "on actual demand" driven.
Digital transformation will affect any industry, sooner or later. This is an introduction on how the real estate business will be affected in the very near future.
I have been recently been involved in a number of projects around and about the Internet of Things (IoT), smart solutions, sensors or remote control endpoints (e.g. traffic lights, cameras) and their connectivity (see Wikipedia for a basic explanation.
Initially I was wondering what IoT is all about. Is IoT like many fashions in the IT industry before (e.g. e-business, SOA, big data, virtualisation) or is it different?
The reason I have asked myself is because most of those previous trends have been announced as fundamental changes, revolutions, game-changer and paradigm shifts, while most of the time there was much smoke about very little. There was hardly any shift. The innovation was never that innovative. The IT landscape only became more complex. The expected revolution never came.
In order to collect my thoughts and put them in order I have create a presentation which I would like to share here.
Bottom line: IoT is different but not in as much as only in technology terms. There is a large part of combining some new and a lot of existing technologies in very innovative ways.
The main impact is however in the following areas:
1. The new and complex ways of doing business.
2. An increased relevance of legal aspects.
3. A change what users expect from IT and IoT in specific.
4. The extension of information security from protection and defence into policing and enforcement
5. The extension of information security to include requirements and considerations of operational safety.
It has become apparent to me that this time it is different because there is a clear impact for people using technology, not just a technological change. IoT is different and will change not only the IT industry but business and social life as a whole.
Just have a look how I think it could impact you. I hope you are entertained and inspired.

The emergence of public cloud has revolutionized the way developers can muster and deploy virtual infrastructures, as and when required.
In contrast, mobile networks are still rigidly defined and protected by operators, who are unable or unwilling to offer such control and flexibility.
As a result, the mobile network operates as little more than a dumb-pipe (unless you have lots of patience and deep pockets).
Addressing this problem requires a different approach, not just the creation of a thin façade over legacy network elements.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

IIT RTC Conf 2014 Henning Schulzrinne Summary
1. IIT RTC Conference
Summary
Illinois Institute of
Technology Real Time
Communication Conference
Highlights from INTERNET
OF THINGS – INTERNET
IN THE SMALL by H.
Schulzrinne
2. Henning gave an interesting and balanced presentation on IoT, which was
very broad, covering not just technology but also business and social aspects.
Its was a pleasure to listen too.
3. M2M is clear, and vertical consumer markets like Nest. Positioning using both
WiFi and WAN will deliver better indoors than GPS. It’s the leap to physical-world
web I struggle with beyond beyond specific vertical applications.
4. This is a key point, its quite a 1st World technology issue. And in my opinion
its 1st World North America. For example thermostat control in Singapore?
What’s the point, get home, turn on AC, its cool in a few minutes. Only in big
homes in North America which can take over an hour to warm or cool does it
possibly make sense.
5. I liked this model, it clearly sets out the role of IoT versus IoE.
6. IoT to date has generally been islands, for commercial, security, and customer
preference. The leap to lots of sensors working in harmony, sharing data, and
some magical “big data” generating insights is too nebulous for me at the
moment. Perhaps if Google gets its way and from handsets and Google home
devices stuff can get exposed, but privacy and security will be major issues.
7. This is a great list and Henning went on to stress the important of taking
responsibility for what your software does even if it gets hijacked.
8. Henning went on to share some interesting work on managing the IoT
integration problem, and a demonstrator created to some some basic
principles: Sense Everything, Control Everything.
9. Congrats to the Mobicents guys, it was nice to see them pop-up in Henning’s
presentation.
10. Henning gives a very balanced review, that highlights the challenges and a
possible way forward. Though reaching beyond the islands will not be simple
from security, customer acceptability (privacy), and integration perspectives.
Henning clearly shows the challenges, and highlights the potential, it was
strange to have such a balanced opinion, which for me would indicate IoT is
worth investigation on its potential beyond M2M, and certainly not the
investment linked to the hyperbole we see in the market today.
