  8. Who am I? Normally I’d be networking before and after so you could get to know me Now I have to rely on a slide! I’ve done pretty much every job in software development Through a series of unfortunate accidents I found myself leading technical teams very early in my career Made every mistake in the book and learnt from them

A lot of people come to me saying one of these things: When you dig further, it is evident that there is a common mindset that life as a Business Analyst would be so much easier if project stakeholders and project management cooperated as requested. There is also an underlying implication that as Business Analysts, we do not have the authority or ability to compel needed contributions. To get to the finish line, we resort to prodding and nagging people. When that fails, we escalate to individuals who have the organizational power to get the results we want. (I will talk to your boss!) I have a different perspective. I take the approach that as Business Analysts, we need to adopt a mindset that we are leaders. We are not going to get authority based on positional power. We will need to empower ourselves. We need to lead with influence. If this is a difficult idea for you to take into your mindset then I want to introduce a concept

  13. So then, if we know we want it - then what is it? Is it persuasion, manipulation? Does it come from authority? Hopefully I convinced you earlier that it isn’t I have quite a simple way that I think about influence
