  24. 24. @Sch4Change #S4CA Stories not only teach us how to act – they inspire us to act. Stories communicate our values through the language of the heart, our emotions. And it is what we feel – our hopes, our cares, our obligations – not simply what we know that can inspire us with the courage to act. Marshall Ganz
  25. 25. @Sch4Change #S4CA Rabbi Hillel the Elder If I am not for myself who will be for me? If I am for myself alone, what am I? If not now when?
  26. 26. @Sch4Change #S4CA Rabbi Hillel the Elder SELF US NOW
  27. 27. @Sch4Change #S4CA Ollie Evans SELF “…And in that moment, I have a choice. I can give her the usual answer, say that we’re busy but everything’s fine. Or I can say something different. I can take a risk.” US “One impromptu conversation at a fish and chips counter became part of a wider change that we continue to lead together in our ambulance service.” NOW “Sometimes opportunity comes from nowhere. But when we seize it, one voice becomes two and more. And a dozen, or a hundred, or even a thousand voices together can lead and sustain positive change.” Ollie Evans Paramedic, North East Ambulance Service (2021)
  28. 28. @Sch4Change #S4CA SELF Everything I speak up about is stuff I’ve been through… I know what it feels like to be hungry. I’m well aware that my friends invited me round to reassure their parents that I was eating. That was my community. US We need to be there for young people. Every young person is trying to find their way… Sometimes, we only need that little nudge to become something we could never have imagined. NOW In my area, so many kids were raised to feel that dreams don’t really happen for kids like us… We need to ask one simple question: Why not? 29. 29. @Sch4Change #S4CA SELF If you can put yourself in my position – I'm 29 years old, I know I've got cancer, I think it's confined to my abdomen... I'm in a side room… A junior doctor comes to see me… I'd never met this doctor before. He came into my room, he sat down in the chair next to me and looked away from me. Without any warning or asking if I wanted anyone with me he just said, “Your cancer has spread”. US To introduce ourselves, to say “Hello, my name is…” is something simple we can all do... Patients are people and we should treat everyone we look after like a member of our own family… NOW If we get the simple things right for students now in their careers, that’s going to bode well for the future of healthcare. Kate Granger, 1000 Lives National Learning event 2014 Kate Granger NHS doctor and founder of #HelloMyNameIs (2014)

  37. 37. @Sch4Change #S4CA Pursuing social change is more of an art than a science… It’s about reading power. Building relationships. Framing issues. Honing messages. Mobilising supporters. Bringing pressure to bear. Sue Tibballs Sheila McKechnie Foundation From: We Change the World: How Social Movements Influence Health and Wellbeing, NESTA
  38. 38. @Sch4Change #S4CA CAPABILITY AGENCY Change agents need CAPABILITY (the quality of being capable; capacity and skills:) & AGENCY (able to take action to express their power) • Improvement skills • Project/programme management • Innovation and design methods • Analytics • Process facilitation skills • Influencing skills • Coaching skills • Self-efficacy • Collective action • Building belonging • Embracing diversity • Relationships • Connections • Social action
  39. 39. @Sch4Change #S4CA Horizontal development: • Adding more knowledge, skills, and competencies • Transmitted through experts Vertical development: • Ability to think in more complex, systemic, strategic and interdependent ways • Learnt through experience Vertical development as well as horizontal development @Sch4Change #S4C

  41. 41. @Sch4Change #S4CA How are you creating a sense of belonging so that everyone is seen and valued for our own unique and authentic selves? Belonging counts more than diversity (the facts) or inclusion (a choice) When we feel we belong, we thrive, and so do the people around us. https://anitasands.medium.com/diversity-and-inclusion-arent-what-matter-belonging-is-what-counts-4a75bf6565b5 Belonging is SO important; being part of the team and being recognised for what you bring, valuing difference. That’s the environment we want to create in the Improvement Directorate Hugh McCaughey, NHS National Director of Improvement Building belonging: a critical task for change agents

  44. 44. @Sch4Change #S4CA Belonging: questions to reflect on • To what extent are we really getting to know the people in our teams or project groups and understanding the unique gifts that each person brings? • Are we making the space in a virtual world (where the lack of direct contact makes feelings, emotions and reactions harder to gauge) to build belonging? • Are we asking people if they feel they are included, feel they have power over the work they are allocated, feel they are in the know, and feel that their ideas are valued?
