Evaluation

For this assignment I was to work in a group to produce a short film. This involved
assigning job roles, making a production diary and then finally making a short film. As a
group we found this was not smooth process. We first wrote a script each to decide on what
was the best idea. When we came to conclusion we began the pre-production.
During my IG2 assignment I created story boards, schedules and other various pre-
production works. This also involved a lot of production meetings with the group to figure out
film times and how the rest of the group was getting on with the work. The meetings also
helped us make decisions on how to change aspects of the film. During the pre-production
stage the group and I went out on location reconnaissance so that we could confirm the
location of filming. As this was a group assignment we were able to share the pre-production
work equally. We also had to understand each other’s job roles and how they would affect
each other in a professional environment.
As josh was the director he was able communicate with all members of the team and
discuss how the shots should be filmed. Although we were unable to record sound due
equipment problems, Kate was the sound recorder. Harrison was the camera man, he was
able to talk to the actor and tell him where to position himself. I was the production runner
and the actor. I carried equipment around and ran about for the rest of the team.
When the short production began we found that work done during pre-production
may have had to be changed during the filming. Changes such as filming times and story of
the actual film had to be changed due to weather conditions and location problems. This was
expected when filming began. Sometimes equipment was not working meaning that it would
prevent filming on the day we scheduled. Despite of these problems we were able to film at
a later date and this sometimes went in our favour as knew ideas cropped up; in my opinion
this benefited the short film.
While filming took place, photographs were taken to evidence our work. Production
logs were also written by each member of the group to record what was done each day. This
helped each member figure what was done and what was to be done. It also helped us
understand if we were up to date or needed to speed up the production.
Once all shots were filmed each member began to make a rough edit using Premiere
Pro and if needed After Effects. We found as a group that each of our edits were very
different, but followed the story quite well. Once my rough edit was finished I wrote an
evaluation on how I could improve it. When this was done, I met with the group to discuss
what was to be re-shot and if we were to add new shots in. This was so that the film was to
more of a professional standard.
The re-shoot was easily done as we had it clear in our minds what was to be done.
More shots were added and the shots that were re-done were improved dramatically. After
this was done the final edit began. I considered just replacing the shots with the new ones
but instead I started again, considering the previous evaluation. This helped me cut down
the length of the film and include the shots that I thought were best.
Using Adobe After Effects I was able to modify the colour of some shots and add a
lens. I found that after looking over my final edit these editing shots only have similar
colourings but not the same. This disrupts the continuity but also adds an effect that makes it
look like the creature is getting angrier and angrier. One all shot were added to the final edit,
credits were made and then added. Finally music that was provided to us was edited and the
added.
When filming we considered what it would look like from the creatures point of view.
We decided that low shots in the undergrowth would fit the creature perfectly. When drawing
the story boards we considered many different types of shots that could make the walking
scenes interesting. Also when filming we didn’t want to have the character in the centre of
the shot at all times so that the audience would look at the environment as well as the
character.
Throughout the film there are various cuts and transitions that help tell the story as
much as the content. Simple cuts at the start of the film help show that the character does
various things over time. Wipe transitions help guide the story to the different scenes. I
believe that the transition should be a bit more desecrate so that the story can flow freely. As
the running shots begin the cuts get faster to show that this is a hectic part of the story.
During the final shots there are cuts to darkness and quick cuts, this explains the violence
during this scene without showing what happens.
In conclusion I believe that as a team we worked well together. We shared work
equally and communicated well. The group had meetings often so that all members
understood what was to be done. We frequently shared ideas which often had positive
results. As a member of the team I believe I worked well with the other members and
contributed well. I also wrote information in the log to keep on top of work. When it came to
filming there is plenty of room for improvement. More shots and takes should have been
filmed so that there was more to work with while editing the film. Cuts and transitions should
have been thought about before editing took place as I had limited idea in what to do.
If there was a larger range of sound effects and sound tracks I believe I would have a
better soundtrack. The credits are very simple and would have been more advanced if more
time was available.
