In the lack of smart home interoperability, users have to find ways to link their smart home systems together. IFTTT for If This Then That is a good way to do it : more and more brands and products are easily connected thanks to it especially in energy management systems.
Smart and Connected home are trending topics and when smart home meets smartwatch, what's the result ? The Applewatch is gaining more and more attention within the connected home industry as many players have launched an App to control their solutions. But is it just a marketing buzz, a gadget or a real help for smart home owners ?
Apple HomeKit got a lot of attention bakc in 2014 but more than one year later, communication and visibility is still unclear from Apple. Few compatible products and unclear strategy so far, Apple is facing what others actors were facing before : tough market and consumers still doubting the benefits of a Smart Home. Will Apple rule the smart home as the company rules high-end smartphones ?

OSGi Community Event 2014
Abstract:
This presentation tells how OSGi can help developing a distributed and cloud ready Internet of Things platform.
IoT brings unprecedented complexity both in terms of technological variety and new development paradigms. Modularity offered by OSGi is the key concept to build maintainable and robust IoT platforms. OSGi declarative services and dependency injection mechanism allow service producers and service consumers to interact with full respect of mutual component boundaries: this is the fundamental requirement to enable important aspects of an IoT platform like multi-tenancy, separation of concerns between M2M protocols management and application development and dynamic services management.
Plat. One IoT platform revolves around the OSGi technology: this presentation describes our lesson learnt during several years of “hands-on OSGi activities” and development.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
3. 3Alexandre Rieupeyrout
Purpose of this analysis
Smart Home market is expected to skyrocket but some real brakes are slowing the market :
- Technology is difficult to understand for mass market
- Often perceived as expensive
- Not always a real interest in it : gadget image
But for the existing consumers and the expected buyers, the lack of interoperability is the most
frustrating loophole :
“ MAKES MY STUFFS WORKS TOGETHER ! “
• Nest : hey Hue Philips, can you shine ?
• Hue Philips : nope, not talking to you, I don’t know you !
• Nest : shit ! Well, I’m going to warm up everything then !
But wait, we know each other, look, you’re on IFTTT as well !
• Hue Philips : oh you’re right, hey buddy, what can I do for you ?
6. 6Alexandre Rieupeyrout
Nest popular recipes :
They want to :
These features are missing in the Nest product datasheet so far but thanks to IFTTT, users can increase the
level of smart home integration of their smart thermostat.
Be alerted
Keep a track of their
data
Link their thermostat
to smart lights
Use geofencing
features
7. 7Alexandre Rieupeyrout
Voice control is becoming more and more trending
Thanks to Amazon Alexa but also Ubi, IFTTT users can control their smart home with voice
command :
8. 8Alexandre Rieupeyrout
Smart home for energy management with IFTTT
Several energy management systems are integrated into IFTTT;
Now let’s check the most used “recipes” to identify the needs in energy management system that
are missing into the smart home systems here :
- Geofencing
- Dedicated alerts and notifications
- Link between various brands and smart home solutions
- Calendar and data tracks
9. 9Alexandre Rieupeyrout
Geofencing
• When it comes to smart thermostat,
the ability to turn on/off the thermostat
based on the position of the user is a
feature that matters for many users
• Ecobee, ThermoSmart, Honeywell,
Nest and Wattio are offering smart
thermostats but there is no geofencing
feature : IFTTT is the solution
10. 10Alexandre Rieupeyrout
Alerts and notifications
• All the available smart thermostats
don’t have the ability to notify and alert
their users.
• IFTTT channels show us that this is
demanded feature among the users
11. 11Alexandre Rieupeyrout
Link between different smart home solutions
• Interoperability is perfectly
represented here when we consider
different brands linked together thanks
to IFTTT
• Some users increase the integration
of their energy management systems
with sensors, smartplugs, smoke
detectors, smart lights ….
12. 12Alexandre Rieupeyrout
Energy management use case : Calendar and data tracks
• Even if scheduling and calendar
features are represented in the smart
thermostats, users like to have their
google calendar with their smart
device
• They are also interested in keeping a
track of their datas; for instance with
their google drive account
13. 13Alexandre Rieupeyrout
Conclusion
• Without a clear interoperability in many smart home solutions, IFTTT appears to be a good alternative to
makes things work together, especially in energy management systems.
• There are also others emerging efforts to develop a widespread interoperability among brands / products
and solutions :
