What is IELTS?
IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is designed to assess the language
ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is the language of
communication.
The IELTS is taken by students and professionals from non-English speaking countries seeking to
work or study in a country where the medium of instruction is English. IELTS is accepted by
Universities in UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
There are 2 versions of the test:
1. Academic Module
2. General Training Module
The Academic Module is usually for people wanting to follow an Academic Course in English and
the General Training Module is usually for people wanting to follow a non-academic course or
for immigration
IELTS has four parts –
 Listening 30 minutes
 Reading 60 minutes
 Writing 60 minutes
 Speaking 11–14 minutes
The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes. The Listening, Reading and Writing tests are done
in one sitting. The Speaking test may be on the same day or up to seven days before or after the
other tests.
What is the scoring pattern?
There is no “pass” or “fail” in IELTS. Scores in all four skills are reported on a band-width of 1-9
with whole or half bands.The average of all 4 scores is then rounded off and reported in the
same manner. Most Universities and organizations require a band-width of at least above 6.5.
How many times in a year is the IELTS exam held?
 The Academic version of the IELTS is available on 48 fixed dates through the year.
 The General Test is available on 24 dates through the year.
