Latest Trends in EdTech BYOD Report HereSean Peasgood
The document discusses the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend in education, where students use their own mobile devices in class rather than being provided devices by the school. BYOD allows schools to reduce costs by passing hardware expenses to students. Students benefit from interactive lessons and learning at their own pace on their preferred devices. The document highlights how one company, EXO U, has developed a solution giving teachers control over students' BYOD devices and providing centralized, cross-platform content and analytics.

- The author attended the AWE 2015 conference and was impressed by the advances in AR glasses technology.
- While AR glasses are still years away from widespread consumer adoption, the author believes AR will significantly change the world similar to other technologies like radio, transistors, and the internet.

The document summarizes changes in Europe between 1000-1500 AD, from the early to high Middle Ages. It describes improvements to agriculture like the heavy plow and three field system that increased food production. As populations grew, more people moved to towns to join the emerging middle class of burghers, bourgeoisie, and merchants. Trade also expanded through routes like the Mediterranean and Hanseatic League, supported by the establishment of local and great trade fairs. New social classes and business practices like guilds emerged as Europe transitioned from feudalism.
The Medieval Church had a powerful influence in medieval Europe for several reasons. The Church became one of the most influential institutions as it provided order, security, and education when governments were weak after the fall of Rome. As the Church grew more powerful in the 11th century, popes gained influence over both religious and political affairs on the continent. They began actively reforming and governing the Church, bringing them into conflict with other leaders, but also increasing their own authority. The Church came to play a central role in both the spiritual and daily lives of medieval Europeans.

Scientists have discovered that DNA can store large amounts of digital data for thousands of years, making it a promising storage medium. DNA can store 300,000 terabytes in a fraction of an ounce, whereas a hard drive of similar size can only store 5 terabytes and may only last 50 years. A researcher successfully stored and retrieved over 1 terabyte of data encoded in DNA. However, the ability to access specific files within the DNA storage remains a challenge that needs to be addressed.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
Strategies for Effective Upskilling is a presentation by Chinwendu Peace in a Your Skill Boost Masterclass organisation by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan on 08th and 09th June 2024 from 1 PM to 3 PM on each day.
