Idents are used to establish a brand identity and keep the identity up to date while promoting the brand. Thriller idents typically have dark colors and obscure imagery to create mystery. The student analyzes DreamWorks and Film4 idents that use symbolism, darkness, and obscured people to generate intrigue without being too adult. For their own ident, the student plans for it to be short, have a dark background consistent with thrillers, and include multifunctional elements to appeal to different audiences.

4. Thriller Idents
These Idents align with the conventions of the thriller genre
as they are quite dark in colour and obscure enough to create
an enigma.

I like this Ident because it is
multifunctional:
• The symbol of the moon
creates a distance from reality
• The dark, evening sky creates
engima
• The clouds add a sense of
hope
• The white figure fishing
implies it is not too adult and
may appeal to a slightly
younger audience.

6. Film 4
This is my favourite Ident I have seen
because of the use of colour.
• The black, white and grey imagery
creates a dark, enigmatic visual
surrounding the ident
• The brand is shown clearly
• There are people in the image but
they are obscured which creates
mystery and suspense
• The use of water splashing is
interesting, visually appealing and
creates mystery.

7. Plans for my Ident
• I’d like my Ident to be quite short, only around 10 seconds
long.
• I want a dark background to align with genre conventions
and to create a sense of suspense and enigma.
• I like the idea of having multifunctional Ident like Dream
Works as then I am not limiting myself to one particular
audience.
