Target audience
The Grip is aimed at 18-34 year olds as I feel like there is already so much catered towards older sports fans and would
like to create a space for fans of all ages and genders. However, as sports channels are commonly marketed towards a
male audience, I will continue this theme as I want to attract existing sports viewers to my channel. My channel will be
accessible online and on mainstream television so it is easily accessible. The Grip will be a British channel and focus on
British sport, although I would definitely incorporate more global sports coverage alongside home games.
Medium of delivery and specifications
The ident will appear between programmes on the channel and will be a key visual aspect of the channels space. The
audio of the ident is important as I plan to build up tension with music and then when the ball finally scores to have a
cheering noise which carries over as the logo appears, allowing the audience to associate the channel with celebrating a
team’s win and general positivity within the sporting community.
Content
I aim to produce a short but effective ident for a sports channel called The Grip. The ident starts with a footballer kicking
the ball, the camera follows the ball and it becomes a hockey ball, which is hit down the pitch and becomes a rugby ball
which is jumped on by a player and then passed, which then becomes a basketball which is thrown through a hoop and
a crowd cheering audio overlays as the screen fades to white and the Grip logo appears with a glow effect that flashes
and disappears, leaving the logo in the centre of the screen.
Purpose
The ident will show the viewer that the channel shows a variety of different sports featuring male and female athletes.
The ball rolling between frames and changing to match a new sport will be entertaining as it attracts the attention of
the viewer and represents the constant mixture of sports that the channel provides. It will be shown in ad breaks
before shows start so that viewers are likely to be watching at that point.
Management and Roles
I feel that my ident will go well as long as I stick with my planning and try not to divert too far from my proposed idea.
The weekly schedule is especially useful as I will be able to see where I need to be at what time. I will need peers to act
in my ident and partially provide sporting equipment. I will be doing the filming for the ident and getting the actors and
equipment organised ready for filming. I will be sorting the location, time and day of meeting. I will also be sorting the
footage and editing it to make the skeleton of the ident. I will then edit the logo and add the VFX animation and
compositing and any refinery that needs doing to complete the ident.
Budget
My realistic budget is ÂŁ5 - ÂŁ10 as I will only be buying a few items of sports equipment and I can buy these second hand
inexpensively. I will be using the colleges’ camera equipment and editing suites so I wont have to pay to rent out these
items.
My hypothetical budget would be ÂŁ1000 as I would have to rent out camera equipment (Canon EOS 50 + tripod + lens =
ÂŁ114 a day from Hire a camera York) and I would need to film for two days. I would also have to rent out an editing suite
and will need a week to complete the assembly of the ident and the after effects work (Four Corners editing suite York is
ÂŁ350 a week). I may need to pay actors or at least pay for travel costs and food costs for the actors. The leftover money
is emergency money in case I need to re shoot or need extra editing time.
Importance of planning
It is important to complete market research before even planning an idea as it allows you to gain an idea of the current
market that your channel is entering. Looking at idents for channels that follow the same theme and researching their
target audiences to see what elements may appeal to yours. Planning is essential to create a professional and polished
looking complete product as it is important to know what you’re doing before starting production. Planning allows you
to have a good idea of how you are going to create the product and who you are aiming it towards. More meticulous
planning (eg planning shot by shot / storyboarding) makes production easier and doing a mock-up allows you to see
how an idea works in practice and change things before spending the time to film and discovering that the footage
doesn’t work the way you wanted it to.

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Content: What do you aim to produce? What will it comprise of? Purpose: Is it to entertain? Inform? How will it be shown? When? Target Audience: Who is the target demographic? Delivery: What is the method of delivery? How will the audience see the ident? What specifications does the client require? (Video/Audio etc.)
  • #3 Importance of planning: Why is it important to plan? In particular, why is it necessary to research and plan for idents? Management and roles: How will the project be managed? Do you require any assistance or peers to help with the project? Budget: Real vs. Hypothetical - Will you be using any additional resources as part of the project that will involve cost?
