Professor Tony Toole presented an overview of management modeling tools for designing educational management systems. The presentation discussed enterprise architecture, viable systems modeling, and soft systems modeling approaches. It also provided a case study example of using soft systems modeling to define the root problem and conceptual solution for a student attendance monitoring system. The key tools discussed were enterprise architecture layers, viable systems' recursive structure and control/communication capacity, and soft systems modeling's root definition, conceptual model, and design of a realistic system.
This seminar discussed the characteristics of IT graduate programs. The objectives were to explore IT programs and raise appreciation for IT's role in industry. IT programs aim to produce graduates who can select, apply, integrate and administer technologies to meet user needs. Key pillars of IT include abilities in areas like problem solving, teamwork, communication, and continuing professional development. The presentation recommended experiential learning like projects and internships to ease students' transition to industry. It concluded by referencing guidelines for IT undergraduate programs.
The document discusses using a three-phase modeling approach to plan improvements to a university's student information management system. The phases included: 1) evaluating the existing "as is" system, 2) analyzing it to identify areas for improvement and design a proposed "to be" system, and 3) adding real-world considerations to create practical solutions. A case study on improving an inconsistent student attendance monitoring system demonstrated applying the modeling techniques. The modeling led to the conclusion that sub-systems for different functional areas were needed, but core data sharing between them was important for effective management.
