Introduction
Identify the geographical features in the images
Introduction
Identify the geographical features in the images
The major types of landforms and
how they are formed
Major Landforms
of the earth
Landforms
It is a natural feature on the
Earth's surface and is part of
the surrounding terrain.
It is formed by different forces
of nature such as water, ice,
wind, and movement of
tectonic plates.
What is a
Landform?
Landforms
These landforms are a result of
two processes
1.Internal process: It leads to
the upliftment and sinking of
the earth’s surface at several
places.
2. External process is the
continuous wearing down and
rebuilding of the land surface
Process of
Formation
of
Landforms
?
Landforms
The surface is being lowered by
the process of erosion and rebuilt
by the process of deposition. These
two processes are carried out by
running water, ice and wind.
Broadly, we can group different
landforms depending on elevation
and slope as mountains,
plateaus,hills and plains.
Process of
Formation
of
Landforms
?
It is a landform that rises at least
300 meters above the surrounding
terrain.
Mountains can be formed through:
A head-on collision between
tectonic plates
Eruption of molten material from
the Earth's interior
Mountain
Mountains may be arranged in a line
known as Ranges
There are three types of mountains
Fold Mountains,
Block Mountains
The Volcanic Mountains.
Mountain
Fold mountains are those
mountians that are formed by the
effects of folding on layers in the
upper parts of the Earth's crust.
These mountians can be old or
young.
Fold
Mountains
They are created when large areas are
broken and displaced vertically.
The uplifted blocks are termed as
horsts and the lowered blocks are
called graben
Block
Mountains
Plateau
A flat, elevated landform that rises
higher than the surrounding terrain.
Plateaus can be formed by:
The upward movement of the
Earth's crust
Small volcanic eruptions
Plateau
A flat, elevated landform that rises
higher than the surrounding terrain.
Plateaus can be formed by:
The upward movement of the
Earth's crust
Small volcanic eruptions
Plain
Some of the processes that form
a plain are:
Erosion of rock, soil, and sediment
through the movement of ice and
water
Volcanic activity, when lava flows
across the area
Plain
It is broad, relatively flat landform.
Those are not more than 200
metres above mean sea level
Some plains are extremely level. Others
may be slightly rolling and undulating.
Plains are usually fertile regions. They are
suitable for cultivation.
It is easy to build houses, roads etc. in
plains.
They are usually thickly populated
regions.
Create a graphic organizer showing the
differences and similarities between a
canyon and a valley.
