Racism is like an epidemic in that it is spread by communities and affects thousands of lives every
day. It is shown through speech and actions from the age range of children to elders. When in effect,
racism can become violent and flip lives upside down. Fast forward past all the civil rights

Eradicating racism all together has been the goal since the beginning of time, but I believe to make

series titled "Switched at Birth". During the specific episode, a select group of white students placed
cotton balls throughout the lawn of the Black Student Union. Since these said students were white
and rich, they got away with it. This lack of punishment from authority for such a horrendous act
created an uprising within the Union. Not only did they peacefully protest, but one member went on
a hunger strike to gain attention. The school refused to partake in the expulsion of the students and
requests of equality from the union, so the one member continued her hunger strike. Soon after this
refusal of acknowledgment, the said member was sent to the hospital as she had passed out and
almost lost her life. Even after this event, the school wanted to ignore her actions and keep the

After learning about Women's History, my eyes were not only opened up to the difficult challenges
faced in the past, but opened up to see the beauty of today. This Women's History class altered my

Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote a letter called, "Letter from Birmingham Jail". This letter was written
to clergymen who criticized his nonviolent approach. It was written in 1963 during the height of the
Civil Rights movement. This letter's purpose is to show the way that King felt about his movement
to create a more equal society than what he was living in and what he thought about his nonviolent
acts contrary to the clergyman. In the beginning of this text, there is a letter from the clergymen that

In recent decades of Canadian history, Canada's social and political change has rapidly formed
visible minority and majority groups– Canada has had formally entrenched a constitution, withstood
two attempts by the Quebec's provincial government to secede from the federation, and undertaken a
radical shift in immigration policy that tripled the visible minority population. These changes were
accompanied by a policy agenda that defined Canadian society as a bilingual and multicultural and
by legal frameworks that ensure all individuals are treated equally before the law. A fundamental
issue infringing Canadian society has been the protecting the rights of minorities of a democracy. I
believe that a nation have equal treatment and opportunity under the law and that minority rights
must be protected to ensure that all citizens are able to fully participate in the country 's democratic
institutions. However, this is true to a certain extent, in some cases it is inappropriate to have
excessive rights as "a visible minority" as such. This will be investigated through three examples of
minority groups: religious/cultural individuals, aboriginals and French language speakers by
answering the question "How far can the rights of minorities be protected in Canada before they
infringe on the rights of the majority?"

forged the Civil Rights Movement in response to the prejudiced approach toward African American
citizens in the United States. The policy advocates that black citizens in particular conditions to
avoid the unfairness they would usually receive. To try and explain why the methods and laws
needed to be adjusted to be equal for everyone. It is essential to realize that 20 Africans came to
America in 1619, records are not clear if they were slaves or indentured servants. It was until 1640
when the first African in Jamestown Virginia was declared a slave. The Court ordered that the slave
had to serve his master for the rest of his life. The slaves made to work long hours and numerous
slaves' endured inhuman treatment and underwent severe injuries. American citizens in the South
challenged a lengthy campaign to seek to continue to be permitted to own slaves but through
Lincoln and abolitionist slave–owning was ultimately banished. Despite condemning slavery and
installing multiple laws in society to assure African Americans be treated comparatively equal
residents, this was not the situation in most regions in America particularly the South. Each attempt
by the government to secure the level treatment of the African American was met with difficulties.
Companies in society rejected the idea to hire African Americans over a white American even if
both had comparable abilities.

The Rights Of Minority Rights
The founding fathers feared that setting up a democracy where the power is all in the hands of the
majority would allow the majority to take control over everyone else in the country. This would
directly cause a denial of rights of minorities. Thomas Jefferson said in his inaugural address, "All,
too, will bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to
prevail, that will to be rightful must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights,
which equal law must protect, and to violate would be oppression"(1). Although defying majority
rule may anger the people the government 's most important duty is to protect minority rights rather

teachers can only say so much. If a child grows up in a home where his/her parents think it's okay to
