Rene Descartes was a French philosopher who doubted all things possible to doubt, which led him to conclude that by doubting his own existence, he proved he must exist. He is known for the quote "I think therefore I am", meaning we are thinking beings and this proves our existence. Fifth grade gifted students studied Descartes and his most famous quote, then illustrated whether they agreed with his philosophy or not.

2. Descartes was a French philosopher who struggled with understanding his own reality. He doubted everything that was possible to doubt and this therefore led to his conclusion that if he can “doubt” that he exists, then he really must be existing! We are thinking beings and this proves our existence and the reality of life. In our study of Philosophy, the 5 th grade GT students were introduced to “the father of modern philosophy.” They read about him and then illustrated their understandings of his most famous quote.
