2. • Hyperloop is an ultra-high-speed ground transportation system planned for passenger and
cargo. It was proposed as a concept by Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, back in
2013.
• It involves travelling people from one place to another in a capsule which is propelling at a
very high speed
• It is based on a principle of magnetic levitation, which explains that a vehicle can be
operated on a guidance track made with magnets
• Concept of hyperloop talks about making travelling an epitome of quick accessibility
WHAT IS
Hyperloop ?
3. Advantages
• Hyperloop uses clean source of energy and hence it is Eco – Friendly.
• It will cut the travel time drastically.
• Low – cost transports system in the long run.
• Resistance to earth- quakes and other natural calamities makes it the safest mode of
transport.
4. Limitations
• High speed of capsule (almost at speed of sound) may cause dizziness to the
passengers travelling due to vibration and jostling.
• Limited space in train and hence people cannot move freely.
• High cost involved in making of infrastructure
• Very high risk to life if the system collapses.
5. Major Players
• Virgin Hyperloop (Formerly – One Hyperloop)
(Incorporated in 2014, Headquarters - Los Angles, California)
• Hyperloop Transportation Technologies
(Incorporated in 2013, Headquarters at California, USA)
• Transpod
(Incorporated in 2015, Headquarters at Toronto, Canada)
• Zeleros
(Incorporated in 2016, Headquarters at Valencia, Spain)
6. Virgin Hyperloop
• The company was founded in 2014 with the name – Hyperloop
One.
• First Company to conduct a full scale hyperloop trials.
• In 2016, the company entered in to a deal with DP Port operator
to develop a cargo carrying system at port Jebel Ali in Dubai.
• It also entered in to an with the government of Finland and
Netherlands for studying the viability of Hyperloop projects in
those countries
7. • After excelling in its vision and mission and getting engaged in several projects
around the world, Hyperloop one received huge investments virgin group.
• Virgin group has invested around $ 245 million in Hyperloop one which is also the
reason behind its renaming to Virgin - Hyperloop one.
• In July 2019, the government of Maharashtra and Virgin Hyperloop entered in to
an agreement to develop world’s first Hyperloop system between Mumbai – Pune
• As reported the first phase of the project would cost around $500 million.
Virgin Hyperloop
(continued..)
8. Mumbai – Pune
Project
• In February 2018, chairman of virgin hyperloop – Richard Branson announced at the
magnetic Maharashtra convergence that his company is set to set up hyperloop
connectivity between Pune – Navi Mumbai.
• The project was planned to be implemented in two phases, the first phase would
include 11.4 km between Gahunje & Ozarde.
• The second phase would comprise of 117.5 km corridor.
• After the change of state government in the year 2020 the project has been put on
hold on the pretext that a developing country like India cannot afford to stake its
money over a untested technology.
9. Future Scope
• Hyperloop technology is the technology of the future because of the non polluting
fuel sources it uses.
• It is all about upgrading transportation infrastructure, using resources judiciously,
travel green.
• Some of the planned projects include New York – Washington DC, Bangalore –
Airport.
• Every change is resisted at first thus its success in the coming future shall not be
confused with initial rejections by the no changers.
