Daily Task:Formulate
hypothesis from a given
situation.
REVIEW!
What are the steps in scientific method?
ENGAGE!
Actual demonstration
Demonstration 1. Get a glass of water.
Say that this represents a body of water.
Place a paper boat inside the glass with
water. Let the students observe the paper
boat (how much of it is submerged
2. Add 2 pieces of paper clips into the
boat. Let the students observe what
happens to the boat.
 Ask the students:
*How many paper clips are needed to sink
the boat?
Start the hypothesis in thos manner/format: “If
I add X clips, then the boat will sink.” (The
students may guess different number of clips.)
3. Ask for the basis of their guess:
Why that number?
EXPLORE!!
Essential Question: How is
hypothesis formulated?
SEE ATTACHED TASK CARD
Arrange the scrambled letters to form the 3
major types of hypothesis.Do this by group
LUNL
ALSCAU
EVITALTANREE
Students will present their output
Lecturette:
What is hypothesis?
a testable statement about the relationship
between two or more variables or a
proposed explanation for some observed
phenomenon.
Educated guess/tentative answer to the
problem
What are the 3 major types of hypothesis?
3.Causal Hypothesis
"Plant growth rate is unaffected by
the presence of fertilizer in the soil."
"Plant growth rate is faster with the
presence of fertilizer in the soil."
What Type of Hypothesis I Am!!!
Raising gas prices causes an increase in the
number of people who carpool to work.
Alternative Hypothesis: Ha: There is
a positive relationship between
height and shoe size.
Null Hypothesis: H0: There is no
relationship between height and
shoe size.
ELABORATE
Identify what the type of Hypothesis; Null,
Alternative, or Causal are the following.
1. Older people who live in rural areas are happier
than younger people who live in rural areas.
2. There is no difference in plant growth when
using either bottled water or tap water.
3. Plants grow better with bottled water
than tap water.
4. Washing your hands every hour can
reduce the frequency of illness.
5. There is no difference in the eating habit
of grade 7 students based on gender
6. Grade 7 male students eat a lot more
than female grade 7 students.
7.All lilies have the same number of petals
8.If a person gets 7 hours of sleep, then he
will feel less fatigue than if he sleeps less.
9.If a person increases their physical
activity (cause), then their overall health
will improve (
10.Regular smoking causes lung diseases.
Activity Performance and Output will serve
as evaluation.
ASSIGNMENT
Define scientific variable.
What are different types of
variables?
 Example: A student wants to know how much bleach kills the most bacteria on the
school desk.
Scientific question: How much bleach kills the most bacteria on the school desk.
Independent variable: how much bleach
Dependent : amount of bacteria killed
Hypothesis:
THANK YOU!!!!!!!
What are variables?
When can you say that a variable is
dependent? independent? controlled
variable?
Check you understanding!
For each of the questions below, identify the
independent, dependent and controlled variables.
Write your answer in tabular form.
 1. How much water flows through a faucet at
different openings?
 2. Does heating a cup of water allow it to dissolve
more sugar?
Molleno wanted to find out how much water
plants need to grow and develop normally. She
put the same kind and amount of soil in six pots
of the same size. She planted the same kind of
seedlings into each pot. The seedlings were of
equal age and heights at the time they were
planted. She placed all the pots in a sunny place
in their backyard. Then she watered each pot
every with different amounts of water.
