Employees at Schering-Piough's Cleve-
land, Tennessee, facility are celebrating
their significant achievements in safety
performance. The site established a new
facility record of 343 days without a single
safety incident in 2002, and now maintains
a safety baseline that is 65% lower than
the pharmaceutical industry average. In
recognition of these safety achievements,
the facility received the Governor's Award
for Safety Excellence at the Tennessee
Safety Congress on July 23, 2003, and
Schering-Piough Safety Eagle awards in
2001 and 2002.
The Cleveland, Tennessee, facility is cur-
rently undergoing evaluation for OSHA Vol-
untary Protection Program (VPP)
certification, a distinction that recognizes
outstanding workplace safety. As this
newsletter was going to press, it was
announced that Cleveland had achieved
"Star Status" based on a successful VPP
inspection. Schering-Piough's decision to
seek VPP certification sends a strong sig-
nal to facility employees that safety is a
corporate value.
A few years ago, the Cleveland site was
not meeting the goal of an injury-free
workplace. Despite safety training efforts,
employees felt that production, not safety,
was the highest priority. Site managers
were concerned at the significant reper-
cussions of inattention to safety issues,
including worker injuries, lost time,
reduced productivity and low morale. A
new approach to safety was needed.
Managers began by overhauling safety pro-
cedures that touched every aspect of plant
operations. Programs such as ergonomics
education, machine safety training and
weekly safety talks engaged employees to
rethink their approach to on-the-job safety
performance. "We take pride in being the

best we can be, no matter whether the
goal is customer service, quality or safety,"
states Environmental Affairs and Safety
Manager Glenn Hutt. "Our safety program
is built on the premise that the pharmaceu-
tical industry norm for accident rates is
unacceptable. We established a goal of
making safety and health part of Cleve-
land's culture." A target of 100 days of acci-
dent-free operations was set in June 2001,
motivating everyone to contribute toward
Schering-Piough's ultimate goal of zero
accidents and injuries.
The new safety mindset was a resounding
success, and the facility established their
award-winning safety record in June 2002.
This achievement directly contributes to
Schering-Piough's goal to achieve a leader-
ship position in occupational health and
safety within the pharmaceutical industry.
VPP Certification is another milestone on
that path, signaling new thinking and a
commitment to uncommon results
through cooperative partnerships and indi-
vidual contributions.
