Slide 1 : The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
The science fiction adventure film The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is an American film
produced by director Francis Lawrence that is based on the novel ‘Catching Fire’ by writer
Suzanne Collins. The film continues with a sequel from the first original film ‘The Hunger
Games’. The film series was produced and distributed by the North American entertainment
company Lionsgate.
Slide 2: Production
The film was produced by the production companies Color Force and Lionsgate. The mian
producers of these two companies were Nina Jacobson and Jon Kilik. The sequel was also
edited by Alan Edward Bell and directed by Francis Lawrence. The film was created in
American but was also published in cinema’s worldwide.
Slide 3: Cast Members
One of the main cast members is Jennifer Lawrence who plays Katniss Everdeen. Her career
began when she was 14 years old and took part in small commercial and film roles. She later
moved to LA with her parents and was casted in the American sitcom The Bill Engvall show
in 2007. She also played Ree in Winter's Bone (2010), which landed her Academy Award and
Golden Globe nominations.
Liam Hemsworth also stars in the film and plays the role of Gale Hawthorne. Liam first
appeared on the Australian TV series ‘Home and Away’ in 1988 and McLeod’s daughter in
2001. He also starred in films including ‘The Last Song’ in 2010 and ‘The Expendables 2’.
Lastly, the role of Peeta Mellark was played by Josh Hutcherson. From the age of four, Josh
knew that he wanted to be an actor and moved to LA with his family when we has nine
years old. His first acting role was in the TV film ‘House Blend’. He also starred in films
including the ‘Bridge to Terabithia’ and the ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’

Slide 5: Distibution
The film was distributed by the Canadian-American film production/distribution studio
Lionsgate. The marketing budget for the film cost around $130–140 million. The film’s
premiere was at the Odeon Leister Square theatre in London on 11th November 2013. It was
later released in Brazil on the 15th November and the 20th in Finland , Norway and Sweden.
It was also released on the 21st of November in the UK and the 22nd in the US. Overall, in
the US the film was released in 4,165 theatres.

Overall, 80,000 posters were published and secured almost 50 magazine cover stories,
advertising on 3,000 billboards and bus shelters.

The film also has a big impact on social media as the film has it’s own Facebook, Twitter and
Instagram page. They also have their own website where people can find out the latest
information and gossip from the film and book.
Slide 8: Subway campaigns
Subway created a campaign called ‘Win Your Own Victory Tour’ to promote the film. A
mobile game app was also created called ‘Panem Run’ which was published via the App
Store for people to purchase and play. Action figures and trading cards were also produced
in popular toy stores including ToysRUs. Moreover, Lions gate CEO Jon Feltheimer told a
conference call earlier this month that the company was pursuing opportunities to open a
Hunger Games theme park.
Slide 9: Trailer

The purpose of the trailer is to draw the viewer and make them want to go see the film in
cinemas. At the beginning of the trailer there is a close up shot of the Lionsgate logo to
identify readers that this is the main distribution company for the film. The non diegetic
dialogue ‘Ladies and Gentleman’ introduces the audience into the trailer and makes them
feel apart of the trailer themselves. A man presents the main characters as he announces
the lead actors ‘Katniss and Peter’. This helps set the scene and notifies viewers who are
unsure on the context of the film who the main stars of the film are. The trailer also includes
scenes of action and drama to help create a suspense atmosphere, reinforcing the purpose
of the film – to encourage readers to go watch the film in cinemas.
Before the film was released, a teaser trailer for the new and upcoming movie was sent out
on April 14, 2013.
Slide 10: Soundtack
In October 2012, James Newton Howard confirmed that he would return to the second
sequel to continue on creating music. British singer, Ed Sheeran recordered three songs for
the soundtrack but Lionsgate declined the offer. Other artists featured on the soundtrack
include Of Monsters and Men, The Weekend & Diplo, Imagine Dragons, Lorde, The
Lumineers and Ellie Goulding.
Slide 11: Other media
The first Hunger Games DVD was released five months after it was displayed in cinemas on
the 18th August 2012. Some copies of the DVD include two dics – one with the feature film
and the second containing extra bonus features. The second sequel to the film Catching
3. Fire is expected to come out on DVD this year on 7th March 2014. There is also a blue-ray
edition including both sequels to the movie which is set to be released on the 17th March
2014.
Slide 12: Exhibition
Before the movie was published, it was predicted that Hunger Games: Catching Fire would
hit more than $140million in the box office on the opening weekend. However, the film
exceeded this and on the opening weekend it made $158,074, 286 . The film was also shown
over 4,163 theatres in the US from the 22nd- 24th November 2012. Overall, the film made
$423,307,516 making it the 35th highest grossing film in the world. The film was also
regarded to one of the highest-grossing film in the Hunger Games series with a high rating
of 7.9/10.
Slide 13: Awards and Nominations
The film was considered to be as a success as the film was nominated for several different
awards which they won two. In 2013 the Hunger Games film won the ‘Hollywood Film
Award’ for the best song. The Grammy award winning band Coldplay received the award at
the 17th annual Hollywood Film Awards for the song ‘Atlas’ which is featured on the
soundtrack of the film. In 2014 they also won the ‘People’s Choice Award’ for the favourite
year end movie.

The film received a number of reviews from several different critics. The Guardian described
the sequel as an ‘international screen sensation’. The telegraph also described the film in
good light as they emphasise on the quality of the film ‘The Hunger Games trilogy carries on
the fine work started by its predecessor’.
