2. Top Career Choices
After taking the assessments the results showed that the tope five career
choices for me were: business professor, community welfare worker, field health
officer, industrial hygienist, and sports psychologist. For additional information I
would like to provide the definitions of these careers provided by the focus website.
Business Professor- “Teaches courses in business administration and management, such as
accounting, finance, human resources, labor relations, marketing, and operations research.”
Community Welfare worker- “Community workers investigate problems of residents in
disadvantaged neighborhoods to determine the needs of the elderly, the poor, unemployed,
unwed teenage mothers and the disabled. They counsel these people about government
programs that can help them become self-sufficient.”
Field Health Officer- “Field health officers track down cases of communicable diseases to locate
persons who may been exposed and locate the source of the disease. They confer with
contagious disease experts to plan vaccination programs to avoid disease spread and advise
exposed persons about treatment.”
Industrial Hygienist- “Industrial hygienists plan programs and practices to protect employee
health, prevent accidents and eliminate hazards in industrial plants. They collect samples of dust,
gases, and toxic materials to assess health hazards. They design employee safety training
courses.”
Sports Psychologist- Sport psychology professionals serve a variety of functions. Some
exclusively perform research and teach courses about the psychological benefits of exercise and
the mental aspects of competitive sports. Others provide career guidance to athletes and help
them prepare for competition.
Career and Future Plans
My own personal career choice is to become a Unit Director for HEB
which is obviously not listed in the assessment. However, I felt that business
professor was pretty similar because essentially I want to be in the business
world guiding other partners which can share similarities with being a professor.
A professor wants to teach people and I think a leader wants to do the same. I
could also closely relate to the community welfare worker because I actually
began my major in social work. I have a huge passion for helping people and for
3. making lives of others easier. I would also really enjoy the counseling piece of
being a community welfare partner. The reason I chose to stay with HEB is
because of how much they care for their people and their communities. I realized
that I could work for a company I already loved and help people while I am there.
I could not see myself becoming a field health officer just because diseases are
not something I think I would enjoy working with. When it comes to the industrial
hygienist I had never heard of that career but it got me very interested. I am all
about employee safety and I think helping to design employee safety training
courses would be pretty neat. Lastly, the sports psychologist sounds really
interesting but not something I would enjoy. As much as I love sports and
athletes I couldn’t see myself having a career where I helped them prepare for
competitions and provided career guidance to them.
Connections
When it comes to my areas of concentration: human resources,
communication, and personal finance I really didn’t feel like my three areas
strongly aligned with any of those career suggestions. I can see where a few of
the jobs had to deal with people and so does human resources but that is the
biggest connection I found. As for my career choice with HEB I feel that my three
areas are extremely important. Human resources is a huge deal at HEB. Our HR
department is so strong that since day 1 of being open we have never had a
single employee call on a union because we have always been able to meet the
needs of our partners. Communication is key when being a leader, you aren’t
only communicating to your partners but also to other stores and corporate
4. workers. Lastly, personal finance helps you become proficient in your own
financial managing and it will help me be better when I have an entire store to
budget for. With being a business professor I feel like communication would also
be important but it is a very different style.
Conclusions
Although the career summary didn’t make me feel like I wanted to change my
career goals it was great to see some of the other options out there. I thought it
was pretty neat that business professor came up because I do love the business
world and I also love teaching people. I also found it pretty interesting that based
on the questions I answered it also found me a few jobs that I felt like I would find
no interest at all. I think that this tool is very helpful but I would hope that people
do not go just solely based on this tool. I feel that it is important to get experience
in some actual fields because it will more than likely help you get a more realistic
idea of what you would be interested in doing.
