The document provides instructions for a research project assignment in a Greek & Roman Humanities class. The paper is intended to offer you an opportunity to study an original work of art from the period covered by
the course. Your paper should include both firsthand observations from the work of art itself and evidence of
library research. Use the interactive map on the Metropolitan Museum of Art website to locate the works of art
on the list below. It is important that you study an original work of art directly, and not rely solely on book
illustrations or online images. The evaluation of your paper will be based both on the content and substance of
the paper as well as your ability to convey information and ideas in writing. Your ability to follow these term
paper instructions is also important. I expect a well-written and organized paper in which your sources are
adequately and properly documented. Before you hand in your paper, please reread these term paper instructions
carefully to make sure that you have followed all of the directions.
Choose a topic from the list of works of art in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (found in the following pages).
Each work of art will have a different subject, history, and literature. When choosing a topic, try to focus on one
that interests you visually as well as thematically, historically, and intellectually. To understand the requirements
of the assignment and how it will be evaluated, please read carefully the section below entitled “Criteria for the
Evaluation of the Term Paper.” In addition, you may find the book by Suzanne Hudson and Nancy Noonan-
Morrissey, The Art of Writing About Art, helpful in formulating your ideas and organizing your paper. This book is
on reserve in the Henry Birnbaum Library.
Format: Carefully organize the important information and main ideas of your paper. In the first paragraph,
introduce and fully identify your subject, the main themes of your paper, and methods of analysis (optional).
Then, in a logical sequence of well-structured paragraphs that make up the body of the paper, develop each of
the themes you introduced in the first paragraph. Begin with the most important theme, which may be to explain
what is known about the original setting (placement), function, and patronage of the work of art, that is, the
specific historical context for which the work of art was made. After an analysis of the historical facts surrounding
the work, include a straight-forward identification of the work’s subject matter (you may include information
about the work’s textual or iconographic source, tradition, and the artist's particular interpretation of the subject

Assignment: This is the birth of your major project for this semester. To begin, you will do a little digging. Consider what about this period is of particular interest to you, what do you have questions about when you consider the late 18thC/early 19thC (1790-1820). Now, find an object/artwork around which you can base your line of inquiry. Finally, start investigating sources that will help you along the way.
This assignment includes your bibliography, including at least 4 preliminary sources (1 of which must be a primary source) as well as a short abstract introducing your proposed project. This must introduce your object and may ask the questions you are looking to unpack.
ALSO - indicate if you will give a
presentation or written essay for Stage 3.

· This assignment assesses your ability to follow instructions, conduct research, and begin a line of original inquiry. I will be looking for at least 4 different sources.

Choose three (3) works of artfrom three artists from the Baroque period through the Postmodern era. Your three (3) works of art should come from the time periods or art movements covered in the reading from Unit 4 and Unit 5. Your choices must comply with the following criteria:
· The 3 artworks chosen must be of the same style or time period. For example, you can choose one of the following suggestions:
· 3 Baroque works of art, or
· 3 Impressionist works of art, or

This project is broken down into two parts.
1. In Unit 4, you will work on the first three bullet points, which are highlighted in bold below, as well as an introduction and conclusion.
2. The "final draft," will be completed for Unit 5, and will cover the last two bullet points (listed in the Unit 5 Individual Project assignment).
Your final paper will be a 1200–1500 word critical essay about the three works of art you have chosen. The goals of a critical essay are to evaluate and analyze the artworks based on research, using the vocabulary and concepts you have learned. Your attitude should be detached (i.e., your personal opinions are not as important as academic concepts; The "critical" aspect of the essay refers to this detached attitude, not whether you react positively or negatively to the works).
Your essay must include the following points:
1. A description of the works including the style. Describe basic facts, as well as the visual appearance of the work (What does the viewer see? Where are key figures located? What tells us that the work is of a particular style?)
2. A summary of the artists' personal philosophies of art (if they can be found in published sources), and the prevailing trends and schools of thought in the art world at the time and in the place the artist was working. In this class you have a rare opportunity to develop, revise/edit, and resubmit your work. Your revised exploratory paper (Essay 2) will become the introduction to your research paper. The revised position paper (Essay 3) will become the body. In addition, you will create a conclusion or "solutions" section for the final project. Note, however, that significant revisions are expected, so you should carefully review the edited draft and rubric evaluations for both essays 2/3 before you begin your final essay.
The final research papers must meet ALL of the minimum criteria for the assignment (in terms of structure, development, documentation style, quality and number of research sources, and writing skills) to be eligible for a score. In other words, you must receive a mark of "competent" in all of these areas to receive a grade for this assignment.

In the Research Paper, you will further develop, revise, and build upon the single perspective argument you have been developing all semester. Your final assignment should demonstrate your ability to apply the principles of argument discussed in the class throughout the semester and it should demonstrate your ability to use critical thinking when discussing a controversial issue.
Directions:
Prepare an 8-10 page research essay that builds upon the single perspective argument paper. The purpose of this assignment is to build upon what you have already created in the course. Therefore, the introduction of your research paper should be drawn from your Exploratory Paper, laying the foundation for the reader by presenting all sides of the issue, the exigence, etc. The body should be drawn from the Position Paper, which incorporates research to support your claim and sub-claims. Obviously, you cannot include the entire portion of each of the previous papers, and your final research paper should show that you’ve developed areas requiring development and made significant revisions to those sections of your papers requiring revision. The idea is to pull sections and points from previous essays. Use comments from me to revise those papers as you incorporate portions of them into this final project.
In addition to revising/developing the exploratory and position papers to serve as the introduction and body of the research paper, you will write an extended conclusion in which you focus on a viable solution and/or conclusion to the issue. For the conclusion, provide a means of solving the problem indicated by your topic. Consider the audience, establish common ground, and provide details for how to implement the solution. A museum exhibition consists of a carefully selected group of art objects that illuminates a specific artistic, cultural, or historical theme. It can explore the development of a single artist’s work (e.g. “The Prints of Albrecht Dürer”), reveal a range of artistic activity from a given time and place (e.g. “High Renaissance Artists in Rome under Pope Julius II”), or chart the depiction of a certain subject throughout history (e.g. “Images of War in the 20th Century”). Much like an academic paper, an effective exhibition makes an argument, using works of art as evidence for its thesis. Furthermore, an exhibition creates meaning through the arrangement of works of art in space. By sequencing works in a certain way, the exhibition’s organizer, or curator, structures the viewer’s understanding of the its subject.
This assignment asks you to create your own art exhibition devoted to a topic of your choosing, consisting of at least four works of art. Unlike your museum paper, this paper does require library research. Your final paper should have the following format:
I. Introductory paragraph: Introduce your reader to your exhibition’s topic. Describe its historical significance (in other words, why was this exhibition worth organizing? what can be learned from seeing it?) and state your thesis.
II. Checklist: Write at least two paragraphs for each work of art in your exhibition. Each entry in your checklist should contain a short formal analysis of the work and describe how it relates to your thesis. Consider how the sequencing of works in your exhibition affects the development of your argument.
III. Conclusion: This paragraph should not simply restate your thesis. What have we learned from your exhibition? What were the consequences of the works you have chosen? How do these works point to future art historical developments?

2) Your research must make use of published sources (i.e. books and journals) and may also include appropriate online material. Best practices for internet research will be discussed in our library session.
3) Your paper must include color reproductions of the works included in your exhibition. Images should be captioned with the following information: artist, title (in italics), date, medium.
4) Your paper must include properly formatted citations and a bibliography. Details on formatting will be discussed either in class or in our library session.

Research Project Description
For your research assignment, you will be tasked with researching a piece of art, analyzing it in the form of a 4-page
research essay, and then reinterpreting it in your own creative way. The following will guide you through the recommended process
to complete your assignment:
1. You will choose your piece of art by drawing a topic, at random, from a hat.
2. Once you’ve chosen your piece of art, perform research on it.
a. For a four-page research project, you should use no fewer than 6 credible sources.
b. With the exception of the databases available through Valencia’s libraries, none of your sources may come
from the Internet.
3. After you’ve completed your research and have a good understanding of the piece of art’s meaning, use what you’ve
learned to create your own interpretation of it.
You may, and in fact are encouraged to, change the medium from the original work of art to your own.
For instance, if you choose a painting, you may reinterpret that as a painting, a song, a film, etc.
Be sure the medium you choose caters to your own abilities and interests, not the original artist’s.
Possible media to consider for your interpretation include photography, fashion design, painting, dance,
sculpture, modeling, film, or poetry.
Be creative and “think outside the box”!
4. Finally, write a research essay that first discusses the original artwork, as you understand it from your research.
This section should make up the bulk of your paper’s length – at least 3 pages.
In addition, you should not use first or second person point-of-view when writing this section of your
paper.
After discussing the original artwork, then discuss your own interpretation. Be sure to explain your own
perspective and artistic choices. This is the only section of your paper in which you are allowed to use
first-person point-of-view (i.e. “After completing my research on Michelangelo, I concluded that…”).
Collectively, the written body of your essay should total 4 full pages.
2. Your text should be double-spaced, set in Arial size 12 font, and have standard 1” margins. Use proper
MLA style citation for in-text citations, the Works Cited page, and the cover page (refer to attached MLA
style guide for help).
5. OPTIONAL: You may email in a draft of your project for my feedback on Monday, April 3rd
to
wadams5@valenciacollege.edu.
6. You will submit both the artistic and the written components of your project in class on Monday, April 17th
.
In conclusion: Have as much fun as you can with this! This assignment isn’t meant as a punishment, but rather as
an opportunity for you to synthesize academic skills with personal expression. The more passionate you are about your
chosen topic, that less “work” this assignment will be.
