• Size : 761 605 square miles (3 times size of Texas)
• Ethnic Division : 60% Mestizo(mixed Spanish and
Indian), 30% Amerindian, 9% Spanish, 1% other
• Religion : 89% Roman Catholic, 6% Protestant
• Currency : Peso
• Transportation : Excellent air and road connectivity
• Shopping : Typical items are silver, copperware, blown
glass, onyx, pottery, hand-woven fabrics, embroidery,
and Indian Arts.
CULTURAL HINTS
• Greet by a soft handshake or a nod
• Women make first move towards the handshake
• Mexican stand close when talking to others
• Mexican loves to touch others to show friendliness
• Hand items to another person than tossing them
• Patient encountering delays
• Dress conservatively
• Call waiter with a psst sound
• To ask for a check pretend writing on the palm
• Hands above the table
• Food basics: corn, beans, chili
• Typical foods: corn tortillas, frijoles refritos, tortas etc.
• Chichen Itza which means “at the mouth of the well
of Itza “, is the 2nd most visited archaeological site of
Mexico today.
• The Kukulkan Pyramid in Chichen-Itza which known as
“El Castillo” (the castle), is one of the new seven
wonders of the world elected in 07.07.2007.
• It is exactly 24 metres high considering the upper
platform.
• Apart from the Kukulkan Pyramid, in Chichen Itza
there many other archaeological sites to visit, all
carrying traces from Mayan Culture in many ways.
Chichen-Itza, now including one of the new 7 wonders of the
world; the Kukulkan Pyramid, is located in the Peninsula of
Yucatan, in the Yucatan State; Mexico, between Valladolid and
Merida and is just120 km from Merida.
• The traditional national sport of Mexico is Charreria,
which consists of a series of equestrian events. The
national horse of Mexico, used in Charreria, is the
Azteca
• Bullfighting, a tradition brought from Spain, is also
popular in Mexico. Mexico has the largest venue for
bullfighting in the world - The Plaza de Toros in
Mexico City which seats 48,000 people
• Mexico is also known for its boxing tradition
• Other popular recreational activities include lucha
libre (Mexican professional wrestling), baseball,
fishing, scuba diving and basketball
• The famous dance in Mexico is
JARABE
• Often called the “Mexican hat
dance” in English
• The music played either
by Mariachi bands or by bands
playing only string
instruments
• FOR EXAMPLE : various types
of guitars, harps and violin
• The dress worn by dancers
meant to symbolize Mexican
women and men
• Women dressed in a style
called “China Poblana” and
men dressed as “Charros”
