How to Write a
Thesis
Statement
Manolo L. Giron
Zambales national High School
1. Start with a question then
make the answer your thesis.
– Example
– Question: What are the benefits of grade 11 in studying reaction paper?
– Thesis: “Studying reaction paper of grade 11 can help them to become ready in
college writing”.
– Question: Why students need to have a physical education?
– Thesis: “ Physical education can help the student to have a good health”
2. Tailor your thesis to the type of
papers you’re writing.
– Determine what kind of paper you are writing;
– Analytical paper. breakdown an issue or an idea into its components parts,
evaluates the issue or idea, and present this breakdown and evaluation to the
audience.
– Example;
– “An analysis of the senior high admission process reveals one challenge facing
counselors: Accepting students with high test scores or students with strong
extracurricular backgrounds”
– Explain the analysis of the senior high admission process.
– Explain the challenge facing admission counselors.
– Expository (explanatory)paper. Explains something to the audience.
– Example;
– “ The life of the typical senior high student is characterized by the time spend
studying, attending class, and socializing with peers”
– Explain how students spend their time studying, attending class, and socializing with
peers.
– Argumentative paper. Make a claim about a topic and justify this claim with
specific evidence. The claim could be an opinion, a policy proposal, an
evaluation, a cause and effect statement or an interpretation. The goal of
argumentative paper is to convince the audience that the claim is true base on
the evidence provided.
– Example;
– “ High school graduates should be require to take a year off to pursue
community service projects before entering college in order to increase their
maturity and global awareness”
– Present an argument and give evidence to support the claim that the students should
pursue community projects before entering college.
What if your thesis statement does
not fall under the three category?
– No problem it is still helpful to your reader.
– narrative paper. It reveals the author ability to share something important with
the reader without mentioning excessive unnecessary details focusing only on
the main messages of the narrative essay.
– Example;
– One life-One opportunity
– Thesis Statement: “I Have only one life and I will use every opportunity to be
successful”
– “Death and Life”
– Thesis Statement: “Death is an inevitable part of life”
3. Take a specific stance to make
your thesis more powerful
– You should address a single issue in great details so that your points can be fully
supported in the body of the paper.
– Example:
– “ The primary problem of the Philippine steel industry is the lack of funds to
renovate outdated plants and equipment”
– The specific is the “Philippine steel industry”
Make the argument you’ve never
seen before
– The best thesis find a novel, exciting way to approach the topic. They’re fresh
and dynamic, which make your essay fresh and dynamic.
Ensure your thesis statement is
provable
– The thesis is the end point of your research, not the beginning
– You need to use a thesis you can actually back up with evidence
