& Entrepreneurship
Hajar Charkaoui
Bruxelles -Belgium
2. The creative process
• Problems that may restrict creativity
• How to eliminate those restrictions
• Hot to lead
• How not to lead
• How to encourage creativity
• Phrases to avoid
• Set up a creative environment
• Creativity among chaos: is this possible?
3. Factors that hinder
creativity
• Praising individuals for individual contributions
• Hierarchies – chains of command
• Employee separation due to departmental
functions
• Growing competition from other companies
• Too much time staring at computers (in the box)
• Getting stuck in routines at work
• More focus on end results rather than process
Creativity is the process, not the result!
How to eliminate
creative roadblocks
• Competition can make people want to withhold their ideas
• Create a network structure rather than management to
eliminate hierarchies
• Work together to enhance creativity
• Build off of each others ideas
• Eliminate or minimize internal competition
• Reward teamwork and “out of the box” thinking
• Embrace individualism
• Get to know customers and what they want
5. Example (cont’d.)
Benefits
• Self-driving cars could generate billions of dollars a year in revenue from mobile internet services and
products
• Future owners of self-driving cars could save up to 50 minutes a day, some of which is likely to be spent
surfing the web
• the additional free time in the car could generate about $5.6 billion a year in digital revenue for each
additional minute that vehicle occupants spend on the internet - as much as $140 billion if half their
free time in the car, or roughly 25 minutes, is devoted to daily web surfing and shopping.
• The revenue may be divided among the vehicle manufacturers, their major hardware and software
suppliers and web-based providers of goods, information and services.
8. How to lead
• Let others take charge
• Put everyone on same level
• Keep everyone engaged
• High energy & humor
• Create a fun environment
• Stay positive
• Encourage failure
• Focus on ideas
• Build on other ideas
9. How NOT to lead
• Put down people/ideas
• Judge
• Criticize or praise
• Try to relate
• Focus on individuals
• Create restrictions
• Discourage failure
Ex. Pixar’s motto “Go from suck to non-suck”
Build off of mistakes or work that “sucks” originally
10. Phrases to avoid
• Let’s discuss it later
• That’s not our problem
• We have never done it that way before
• It’s too late or too early
• This won’t work or be accepted
• It’s not in the plan
Phrases like these cause discouragement
and unwillingness to contribute ideas
11. Set up a creative environment
• Happy colors and images
• Light Blue – boost mental clarity
• Red – can trigger aggression and anxiety
• Team bonding activities
• Positive environment
• Personal touches
• Retreats
• Doodle areas
16. The Hover car concept
• https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6ums9UiZA8
• The hover car concept was one of over 119,000 ideas submitted
during the People's Car Project that Volkswagen held in China prior to
the auto show.
In order to figure out what we must do to liberate creativity in the work place, we must first acknowledge what problems companies face that hinder employees from being able to think creatively or voice their opinions and ideas.
