This document discusses how libraries can insert themselves into the mobile sharing economy by leveraging patrons and resources. It suggests building a larger book sharing model and tapping patrons to host programs and services. This would allow libraries to share connections and resources across a larger patron base. Topics covered include how ridesharing led to the sharing economy, crowd-sourcing content from patrons, and determining methods of delivery for shared resources. Examples provided include library makerspaces, tool libraries, seed libraries, and sharing excess items. The document emphasizes that trust is key to success in the sharing economy.

Museums are from Mars, Visitors are from Venus: Three Strategies for Interste...Jessica Milby
Collection information isn’t always written in the language of the people, and interpretive tools require the human touch. Bringing your collection resource into the 21st century is a long road. Even more tricky is rallying an entire institution around these goals—and there are multiple approaches. Do you take the path of overall restructuring? Do you empower a group of cross-departmental leaders? Do you bring in leadership from outside? How do you build a better collection resource…one that fuels online collections, in-gallery interactives, and internal research? What sort of strategies can position you to improve a resource that everyone, including the visitor, should own? How does an institution take advantage of digital tools to bring the visitor closer, without sacrificing core projects?
Three digital collections and information managers will tell their institutions’ stories on using their digital collections and content to seed change within an institution. Overall restructuring can place your digital collections in the administrative realm of public engagement. Empowering cross-departmental leaders can direct you to bridge the museum-visitor communication gap with data. Leadership from outside can shake up approaches to content management and distribution to new audiences.
We will tell the story of three different institutions’ strategies for overhauling collection resources strategically with the visitor and the museum’s future in mind.
When you browse the net - you often send sensitive and highly personal data - passwords, banking information and so much more. One of the basic protections we have is a secure connection - or HTTPS instead of a HTTP. What does this mean? Should you enable this secure connection on your website? How can you inform your users to seek out these connections?
Typing our banking information, secure passwords or our credit card information into an unsecure connection - can put at anyone at high risk of having our information stolen.
This scenario and various others are all to true in the digital age and can wreak havoc on many individual’s personal lives. Some leading towards bankruptcy and financial ruin. This webinar will discuss:
- what HTTPS is
- how it functions
- how to enable it
- where to get a SSL certificate that will sign your HTTPS implementation
-along with where it should be implemented.

Webinar - The Changing Landscape of Library Privacy - 2016-06-15TechSoup
Visit http://www.techsoup.org for donated technology for nonprofits and libraries!
Do you have concerns about patron privacy at your library? Some argue that libraries should collect, retain, and use patron data to provide better personalized services to patrons. This is a serious challenge to the profession's ethical commitment to protecting patron privacy, especially since many platforms providing these services are operated by vendors who may not share librarians' professional values. We explore these issues and discuss possible frameworks that allow libraries to provide personalized services while maintaining their commitment to protecting patron privacy.
Watch this free webinar where we will hear from library privacy experts. Deborah Caldwell-Stone (ALA Office of Intellectual Freedom) will share the legal and ethical foundations for patron privacy, as well as resources that can be used to help libraries preserve privacy when adopting new technology. Michael Robinson (Intellectual Freedom Committee, Alaska Library Association) will share specific examples of how new technologies and platforms can pose a threat to patron privacy, and what can be done to minimize those threats in the library setting.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

of the sharing economy, or collaborative consumption
Editor's Notes
Depending on who you ask, we can call it:
"peer to peer sharing,"
"collaborative consumption,”
Or even
"collaborative production,"
We can even expand collaborative practices to include
crowdfunding,
microfinancing,

peer-to-peer lending.
As a child, you were told not to speak to strangers, but as an adult, you can share almost everything with strangers: cars, homes, bicycles, movies, music, and more. It's called the sharing economy and this seemingly altruistic shift is big business.
As PricewaterhouseCoopers predicts in its 2015 report, companies that adhere to the sharing economy's business model of access over ownership have the potential to increase global revenues from roughly $15 billion today to about $335 billion by 2025.
Trust, Convenience, Sense of community are all factors in pushing adoption of the sharing economy forward.

Re-assess retail space: Thanks largely to the shifting emphasis on experience, big and small brands alike are looking for flexibility in how they reach consumers. That means rethinking the channels they use—in particular, their physical footprint. Enter Storefront, a startup that enables retailers to set up pop-up shops or sell items in boutiques.
The platform connects those who have shops or empty real estate in highly trafficked areas with merchants seeking to peddle their wares—in short, it’s an Airbnb for merchants, offering the benefits of both temporariness and uniqueness.
Listings include full retail stores that can be used as popup shops as well as shelf space in boutiques, and locations range from neighborhood shops to subway stops to hotels. The flexibility that Storefront offers can be a boon to brands looking to dial up their experience or pitch new products.
So far, more than 1,000 merchants have used the platform to open up shop in New York and San Francisco. And for those providing the space, it’s an ancillary revenue stream—on average, most retail spaces are closed for 15 hours per week, time that could be otherwise monetized through new platforms.
The recession may be over in the United States, but the values that emerged during it appear to be staying put—and the sharing economy is giving new weight to the axiom “less is more.” 78% of consumers (PriceWaterHouse) surveyed agreed that the sharing economy reduces clutter and waste—millennials and households with kids most strongly agreed. These attitudes are a growing threat to a retail industry that is struggling to buoy its numbers—in December 2014, waning holiday sales led consumer purchases to decline 0.9%, despite economic growth and lower gasoline prices4 .
Libraries have been leaders in demonstrating the value and potential for free/shared resources and spaces.
As the sharing economy advances and moves in new directions – electronic devices, transportation, tools, education, equipment – the roles that libraries play as sharers may need to change and adapt.
Libraries will need to see what they can do - and share - to stay relevant in the sharing economy and to meet the needs of people interested in sharing.
According to a 2014 Nielsen survey of more than 30,000 internet users in sixty countries, 68% of consumers are willing to share or rent their personal items for payment and 66% of consumers are willing to use products and services from others.
Respondents identified electronic devices (28%), power tools (23%), bicycles (22%), clothing (22%), household items (22%), sport equipment (22%), cars (21%), camping gear (28%), furniture (17%), and homes (15%) as the products they would be willing to share or rent for a fee and 26% of respondents also indicated a willingness to rent lessons or services.
The sharing economy relies heavily on trust, which social technologies help advance through publicly shared feedback, reviews, comments, and connections.
Appreciation and interest in the sharing economy may be generational. According to Nielsen’s survey, younger generations – 35% of Millennials and 7% of Generation Z – are more willing than older generations - 17% of Generation X and 7% of Baby Boomers – to use or rent products.
This could mean renewed interest in the sharing value of libraries, but may require that libraries update the scope of services and programs available for sharing to keep up with interests of younger generations.
Cities and governments will likely see opportunities in the sharing economy to help improve the experiences of citizens (e.g. bike share programs).
Libraries may have the opportunity to align themselves with sharing economy services (repair cafes, garden sharing, work spaces) that promote social good.
