This document outlines 25 common problems found on library websites and provides suggestions for how to fix them. The problems are organized into four categories: missing but not forgotten, everybody else got the memo, search headaches, and major league problems. Suggested fixes range from simple changes that can be made by library staff to more complex issues that may require hiring a professional web developer. The overall goal is to make library websites more user-friendly, accessible, and responsive to patron needs.
700 posts – 1 menu, organizing a large info site with taxonomies and facetsBecky Davis
Ever been on Amazon, searched for shoes and then filtered results to show women’s and red? Yep, WordPress can do that.
How do you set up an informational site that has over 700 pages and is constantly growing? How will anybody find anything? By crafting the menu and template pages to show categories of items and allowing the user to filter the results. Through the use of custom taxonomies, template pages with custom queries and a faceted search result, we’ll walk through how a site can be setup so that it can grow and maintain it’s consistent structure. Even if your project only has 70 posts, being able to cross-reference them with multiple terms so that no matter how they look for things, the information will be found, is very powerful.
This session will be useful for site owners, designers, devs & UX people who are looking for new ways to organize content that go beyond endless hierarchal dropdown menus.
How to Organize Your Content Through Navigation and WayfindingShanta Nathwani
Posts vs. Pages & Categories vs. Tags. There is so much confusion about what types of things should be put on a page and what should be in a post. Static vs. Dynamic content is the best way to tackle this. When creating a website, you can edit a menu to include not only pages, but also categories that can create a more complete experience.
As websites and web applications get larger and more complex, one of the great challenges is how to rapidly prototype to get immediate client feedback and agreement from your customer and identify any hidden technical issues before investing significant time and effort writing code.
In this session, you will learn how to create custom post types and taxonomies, extend the media library, add REST API endpoints, custom routes, virtual pages, and display all of it with formatted pages in only a matter of minutes.
Whether you’re building a Software-as-a-Service, or you just need a Minimum Viable Product to demonstrate to your client, PODS enables you to test an idea out quickly and efficiently.
Attend this session to see how PODS works in a start to finish site build.

Web components are the new hotness. Fact. Already there are frameworks like Google’s Polymer and X-Tag from Mozilla that are set to make building websites with web components much easier. But you should really learn the foundation that these frameworks are built on before exploring how they make your life easier. That’s what a responsible developer would do. You’re a responsible developer, right? I’m not either but even if you’re not, come anyway and see what one looks like. I’m sure at least one will show up. In this session we will take a good long look at some basic features of native web components. We will discuss and demo the use of HTML5’s new template tag, create our own custom html elements without using a framework, explore the spookily named Shadow DOM, and bundle it all up using HTML5 imports. Bring your laptop, a modern browser (Chrome, bring Chrome), and your JavaScript skills and let’s make a thing with web components!
In this article, I’m going to give you 11 HTML project ideas for beginners.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

13. Add the address and main phone number to the homepage,
either in the header or footer.
You may need some basic HTML/CSS to shift things around to
these elements.
18. Create a custom favicon.
You may need some basic HTML/CSS to add the metatag for
element. You may need basic graphic design skills to create the
image.
21. If you’re not using a content management system with this
feature built in, you’re going to need a professional.
To create breadcrumb trails dynamically, you’ll need someone to
write some serious code.

35. Look, I know you won’t get rid of it, no matter what the data
says.
At least make sure that the images have alternative text
and that the carousel doesn’t auto-rotate.
39. Just stop doing this!
You’re slowing your library’s site down, making it more
inaccessible to handicapped users and costing people more
money on mobile.
51. Chances are good that your library’s search feature has more
than one of these issues.
Most of these will likely require more major HTML/CSS
modifications and/or back-end scripting.
58. There are so many different things that can cause a slow site.
Server configuration, scripts and script placement, images and
many more. Get a pro.
63. This may likely require completely rebuilding your website…but
it will be worth it!
Consider using a CMS that has responsiveness built in, or
a professional.
