How to find books at The TCK Library
- 1. http://www.tanenbaumchatlibrary.org/kimel/ 1. Go to the TCK Library website
- 2. 1. Choose catalogues 2. Choose TanenbaumCHAT 3. Choose library catalogue
- 3. 1. Type in the author or title of the item you are looking for. 2. If you do not know author or title, choose “anywhere” and type a few key words 3. If necessary you can limit your search to DVD, book, or magazine .
- 4. 1. Use wildcard* when searching for keywords. 2. Cana* =Canada, Canada’s, Canadian, Canadians. 3. Library has 1 book on Canadian Oil Sands but four books using the wildcard/truncation feature as above.
- 5. 1. Write down the call number to find the book on the shelf. 2. 333.8232 KEL is the call number for the first item above. 3. You can modify your search to find other books by using the subject headings found in the book by Kelly. For example,” clean energy industries” or “Oil Sands”.
- 6. Environmental Protection Alberta Athabasca Basin Clean Energy Industries Pipelines Oil Shales Alberta Oil and Gas Conservation Board Oil Shale Reserves 1. If the library does not have books on your topic, use other keywords. 2. In the example below, use the keywords listed to find items on the Canadian Oil Sands. 3. If you do not know which keywords to use, read an article from an encyclopedia and write down keywords from the article.

- In this example I was looking for books on the Canadian Oil Sands. Notice that I abbreviated truncated my search words. C-A-N- A with a star sign will search for items that include Canada, Canada’s, Canadian and Canadians. S-A-N-D with a star sign will search for sand, sands and sand dunes. In this example the library has 4 books on this topic. If I search for Canadian oil sands I would only find one book and would have missed out on the other three good books in the library.
- If the book has a green icon it is available for loan. You can find the book on our shelves according to the call number. The call number to the first book by kelly is 333.8232 KEL. You need to write down the complete call number to find the book on the shelf. If you wish to find other books on this same topic you can search using the subject terms found in this book by Kelly. For example clean energy industries.
- If the library does not have books/resources on your topic, consider using alternative words. In this example, all the terms on this slide can be used to search for information on oil sands. Read an article from an encyclopedia and Write down a list of altnerative words .

- When you log in, you can reserve books and see the history of your loans. You can also change your login and password.
