Editor's Notes

  1. How social media affect the English vocabulary Sara Haugen Arnesen 15GLU5-10 October 29th 2015
  2. From unfriend to selfie, social media is clearly having an impact on language.  Since so much of the written language we see is now on the screens of our computers, tablets, and smartphones, language now evolves partly through our interaction with technology. From the introduction of new words to new meanings for old words to changes in the way we communicate, social media is making its presence felt.
  3. An important element of Twitter is the hashtag – a clickable keyword used to categorize tweets. Hashtags have also spread to other social media platforms – and they’ve even reached everyday speech social media has also made a revolution in the way we communicate. We share more personal information, but also communicate with larger audiences. Our communication styles consequently become more informal and more open. When writing on social media, we operate within the creative constraints of 140 characters on Twitter and Facebook, so we need to stick to the point and we get to the case quicker.
  4. Social media is making it easier than ever to contribute to the evolution of language. You no longer have to be published to bring word trends to the attention of the masses. Facebook, and similar social medias, have entered our everyday vocabulary. Phrases such as “rolling on the floor laughing” or “talk to you later” are quickly changed to “ROFL” or “TTYL.” These short acronyms creep up in everyday language, proving that sometimes words, when put together, can make you “LOL” or “laugh out loud.” As technology and social media continues to advance, there will surely be more language-altering shifts occurring.
  5. Facebook has also done more than most platforms to offer up new meanings for common words such as friend, like, status, wall, page, and profile. Both like and wall are in the top 1000 frequently used words. Phrases such as “rolling on the floor laughing” or “talk to you later” are quickly changed to “ROFL” or “TTYL.” These short acronyms creep up in everyday language, proving that sometimes words, when put together, can make you “LOL” or “laugh out loud.”
  6. Phrases such as “rolling on the floor laughing” or “talk to you later” are quickly changed to “ROFL” or “TTYL.” These short acronyms creep up in everyday language, proving that sometimes words, when put together, can make you “LOL” or “laugh out loud.”
  7. We get closer to the world. English is getting known for «the world language» since it has 380 million native speakers. Third largest language in the world after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. In interactive video games where English is the only language that is written, you are forced to write it to communicate with other gamers. In my own experience, where I had two german and one mexican roommate, the only language that we have in common is English. We were communicating through our cultures and our differences. Social Media Language Learning (SMLL) links interactive social media channels to language learning. This enables students to develop communication and language skills. Social media consist og interactive forms of media that allows useres to interact with and publish to each other, generally means over the internet.
