How Pad Locks are
made!
What is Pad Locks?
• Pad Locks are portable Locks that can prevent theft ,
vandalism or harm.
Introduction to Different Parts of Padlock
• Shackle (Shank)
• The Shackle is a “U” shaped loop of metal
that encompasses what is being secured by
the Padlock.
• Locking Mechanism
• Locking Mechanism directly engage the
shackle with the tumblers.
• Body
• Solid Padlock Body is casted from Large
rods of metal like Aluminium, Brass or
Zinc.
Mechanism of Padlocks
Assembly Of Raw Materials
Long Iron Rods Iron Rods for Shackle
Keys for Padlock
Manufacturing Process
• 1. Cutting of Iron Rod
• Iron rods of 25 kg each are cutted at equal length which forms lower body of
lock.
• These metal blocks are incredibly strong.
• These blocks are checked in machine if they are exactly of right size.
Manufacturing Process
• 2. To make Padlock Arms (Shackle)
• Small Round Iron Rods of equal length are cutted.
• They are also bent in U-shape.
• These rods are placed in another machine to make a groove at it’s end which
is helpful in locking mechanism.
Manufacturing Process
• 3. Heating of Padlock
• Now Lower metal block and upper arms are heated at high
until it turn red hot.
• Then they are cooled rapidly.
• This process makes the metal more flexible.
• 4.Coating of Nickel to reduce rust formation
• They submerged in a bath alongside sacks full of nickel dust.
• Nickel has been given a positive polarity.
• So, when padlock set to a negative polarity ,it attracts the
nickel dust which makes a coat on it.
• Then padlocks are given a another rinse.
Manufacturing Process
• 5. Chrome plating to give more durability
• This coating process is same as that of Nickel
coating done in previous slide.
• Padlocks are again rinsed in water.
• 6. Locking Mechanism
• Seven digit number is generated for each
padlock.
• So ten million combinations of numbered rings
which is fitted by lock builder.
• These fitted rings are combined and placed in
the hole of pad lock in lower side.
Mechanism of Pins
Manufacturing Process
• Locking mechanism consists of two elements:
• Ball bearings
• These two bearings get embedded in the grooves of the
arm and when placed they comes out of the groove and let
the lock open.
• Pin
• This pin of the side of barrel ensures that right key opens
the lock.
• 7. Sealing and testing of Lock
• Their body is sealed and arm of the lock get joined with it.
• Then these locks are tested at very low temperature of -40 °C.
• Finally , Our Padlocks are ready.

Locks were used in
Egypt some 4000 years
ago to secure valuables.
