The study of history of international relations affects our daily lives in several ways:
1) It helps us avoid repeating the mistakes of the past that led to wars and conflicts, such as poor relations between countries that contributed to World Wars 1 and 2.
2) It has made countries more conscious of maintaining peaceful relations with other nations and recognizing interdependence, leading to cooperation through bodies like the UN.
3) However, some issues like terrorism persist due to failures of international relations and poor response, as seen with the rise of groups like Al-Qaeda in response to issues in Iraq.
4) Examining history has moved the world towards greater humanitarianism, with the UN and other groups providing aid, and countries

Poverty in Africa: What Africa needs now?Azhari Sadig
Poverty in Africa refers to the lack of basic human needs faced by certain segments of African society. African nations typically fall toward the bottom of any list measuring small size economic activity, such as income per capita or GDP per capita, despite a wealth of natural resources.
People move for a wide variety of individual reasons. But there have been two moments in U.S. history in which millions of people came to this country at the same time.
What kinds of large-scale disruptions cause millions of people to move at the same time?
These are both times of global economic upheaval. The industrial revolution caused a massive economic shift across the world, from agricultural economies to urban/industrial economies, realignments of global power, and millions of economic and political refugees.
Today, after 5 years of struggle, more than half of Syria's population is displaced. The Syrian refugee catastrophe is not the result of a natural disaster, but rather the outcome of systematic policies aimed at suppressing a popular uprising, the inaction of world powers and inability of the international community to respond to the largest humanitarian catastrophe of our generation.
Hunger has always affected many people of many countries all around the world, such as in Asia and Africa. We want to raise more awareness to the public about the reasons for hunger, specifically for the people in Africa. We want to be able to show people how hunger is a growing problem to our modern world.
Canada is a small, open economy in a globalized world. As a result, Canadian governments have tended to prefer negotiated agreements that govern trade, instead of the insecurity and ‘wild west’ of unfettered competition. At the same time, Canadians tend to support relatively high levels of government involvement in economic management, making it difficult to maintain a balance acceptable to our trade partners. With the US ‘elephant’ increasingly hostile to multilateral efforts, and the Trump administration targeting Canada in a variety of different ways, it remains to be seen how much Canada ‘the mouse’ will be able to hold its own in international negotiations. This session will explore the past, present, and future prospects for Canada as a trading nation in a world increasingly at odds with our preferred model of economic development.
World hunger is a crippling crisis which plagues humanity. We are all one people, cosmopolitans. Together we can solve this crisis. The money necessary to end world hunger is nominal at best and cheap in relative reality to the economy. By ending world hunger, a seed will germinate in the throat of greed. Opportunity will blossom where watered. Philanthropy

Looking at Innovations in Curriculum through the Lens of 21st Century SkillsParisa Mehran
An innovative curriculum is characterized by the incorporation of 21st century skills, i.e., the essential skills needed for success in today’s world such as critical thinking and collaboration. Using Jenkins’ (2009) inventory, we investigated the curriculum orientations of Iranian school teachers particularly in terms of the precedence they give to critical thinking and students’ interests and needs. The participants endorsed curriculum innovation and valued the development of higher-order thinking skills and students’ 21st century concerns such as digital literacy. The results of this study will be further examined by comparing and contrasting the Iranian with the Japanese curricular practices.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2. John Jay, former chief justice of the United States of America and a diplomat, defined History as
“a narration of the events which have happened among mankind. Including an account of the rise
and fall of nations as well as other great changes which have affected political and social
conditions of the human race.” History without a doubt affects our everyday lives. Below is an
argument meriting how the study of History of International Relations affect our daily lives.
Scholars all over the world studying the History of International Relations all agree on one thing,
it is crucial in avoiding repeating the same mistakes committed by our ancestors. For example
the infamous wars, World War 1 (1914) and World War 2 (1939-1945). The causes of these wars
were political, territorial and economic disputes that had bottled up for years until they could not
take it any longer. The European countries had poor relations with each other and were hell bent
on promoting own power and prestige without the regard for human suffering. Looking back at
our ancestor’s poor approach on International Relations, we are now more conscious on how we
handle relationships with other nations. Because of our History we now understand that no single
country can survive on its own. This is why the United Nations has been able to operate for so
long since the year 1945 to this day. We have become more mindful of the idea of International
Peace.
Unfortunately, terrorism is rapidly growing and forming International Organizations.it is said
that the rise of the Al-Qaeda organization began after the United States of America moved in on
their country without authorization from the Iraq government to extract their vast deposits of oil.
A plentiful natural resource that was once found in Iraq. This is an example of how International
Relations has failed. The United States was not sanctioned for their actions which forced a
3. portion of the natives of the land to form a group intended to fight for their rights. This is
possibly one of the worst failures of the United Nations since they were supposed to protect the
people of Iraq from the United States who were destroying their lands in such of oil breaching
the United Nations’ charter. The idea by the Muslims living in Iraq was noble at first but it
quickly turned into senseless killing and use of sanguinary means to achieve an audience with
the international community. I believe that this could have all been avoided if the United Nations
had stepped in early enough many lives would have been spared .From Al-Qaeda, ISIS (Islamic
State of Iraq and Syria) now known as ISIL (Islamic State of Syria and Levant) and the Al-
Shabaab based in Somalia broke off and are now terrorizing the World on multiple fronts. The
most recent attack was in Paris (13th November 2015) where 129 people were killed and as many
were injured. Also in Kenya, Westgate mall (21st September 2013) where 67 people lost their
lives and 174 were injured. The rise and growth of terrorism is a result of poor International
Relations and because of this, human beings now live in fear because of poor handling of the
terrorism threat by the then management of the United Nations.
By studying the History of International Relations, the world has evolved from their egomaniacal
ways to a more benevolent community. The world through the United Nations is now more
accommodating to non-nationals who seek help to better their lives. The UN offers aid in form of
food or relief funds to countries that cannot tend to their citizens due to National poverty.
Examples of the UN Programs are, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP),
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), World Food Program (WFP),
United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Environment Program (UNEP),
World Health Organization (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the World
Bank just to name but a few. This programs are operational to assist poor and disaster stricken
4. countries. In September 9, 2015 Germany took in refugees from Syria and surprised the entire
world by promising to take in 500,000 refugees seeking asylum every year for a number of years.
In the past History has not been too kind on Germany seeing as how they persecuted persons
from different races. This proves how history has influenced our lives today.
In the 18th and 19th century the international system was terrible to Africans. The black
community was treated as savages and primitive beings. It is for these reasons that the
international system treated the Africans as slaves were our ancestors used to be coerced into
performing hard tasks like picking coffee for little to no pay not forgetting how they were treated
physically by whips on the bare back and torture methods like starving them for days. The black
community basically did not have a voice and therefore had no rights. The Africans who
remained in Africa were evicted from their homes and placed in less productive land while the
Foreigners exploited them and took advantage of their inability to defend themselves as they had
inferior weapons. Those who were shipped off to the “new world” were taken to war to fight for
their masters and tend to their crops and their every needs. Today we find that the black
community is free to pursue own interest as much as the white man. Today we see the black
community are also vocal on important matters. Examples are Nelson Mandela former president
of South Africa and freedom fighter Kofi Anan, former secretary general to the United Nations,
James Mwangi CEO Equity Bank, Oprah Winfrey media personality and former TV talk host
and a pioneer of black lives matter campaign, Ellen Johnson president of Liberia and Barrack
Obama president of the United States of America.
The strides we have taken to achieving better lives are truly great. History has affected us all for
better and for worse. But we still have a lot of work to do if we are to learn from our previous
mistakes and move forward, together as one toward a better tomorrow.
