- Good afternoon and thank you for allowing me to share some insights on Employee Training and best practices we are seeing in the industry.
- Good afternoon. Why are we all here today? Because we are all passionate about safety. Safety of the food we produce. Safety of our employees who work so hard – and under difficult conditions – to make the food. This is hallway board at one of our clients and it’s a great reminder of the importance of what y’all do every day and the impact that your employees have on food safety.
- I’d like to get a sense of the challenges you face with your frontline employees. Just a quick show of hands… You are not alone. I was with a large pork processing with a client in Canada, and they gave me shocking turnover statistic. When an employee decides to quit, 43% of the time, the employee doesn’t even notify that he/she wont show up the next day. 43%! Throughout the food industry, this is the frontline workforce reality. And I’d guess its even more tougher for y’all. Am I right? This makes safety training really hard. And y’all are heros for what you do every day under the intense operating pressures. So lets start with some good news!
- The good news is that food industry frontline workers – for the most part - are genuinely motivated to do well at their job. In fact, 64% agreed, 31% were neutral, and only 5% disagreed. How do we know this? Because we asked them.
- See, every year, Alchemy and 7 other organizations like SQF, GMA, BRC, and National Science Foundation and others conduct a massive research project called the Global Food Safety Training Survey. We do this survey annually and we just got the results of the 5th year a few months ago. I’m about to show you a whole bunch of slides with great data, but don’t worry about taking photos/scribing. You’ll have a copy of the slides and I brought a print copy of the report.
- Food Safety budgets are mostly flat or even increasing. Only 6% of companies have declining budgets. In fact, 4X more than decreasing. This is a good indicator that management is committed to food safety. For those of you whose budgets are decreasing, you may want to use the results of the survey to bolster your case for additional budget.
- Another sign that companies are committed to strong food safety is that 74% of companies agree that they have a clear vision for strengthening food safety. Again, this is a good sign that food companies have a clear sense of where they need to go with their food safety programs.
- We also asked food companies if they are able to provide the food safety training to drive the right safety behaviors, and the vast majority said yes. So sounds like they have the tools they need.
