20080704 innovative approach in contracts and tender procurement managementraymond_wan2005
This presentation discusses innovative approaches to contract and tender procurement management. It outlines different types of contract procurement like design-build and discusses why the design-build approach may be suitable for certain projects. A case study is presented to illustrate how design-build procurement could be applied. The presentation concludes with a question and answer session.
Phil Bernstein invented Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the 1970s without realizing its future impact. His innovation would revolutionize building design by enabling time and cost savings through non-linear, collaborative solutions. It would become widely used through software like Archicad and Revit. BIM allows all stakeholders to work together on a virtual model throughout a building's lifecycle from design through operation.
The document discusses green building and LEED certification. It summarizes that the Pirates baseball team recycled over 262 tons of materials in 2010. It then discusses how green building impacts owners, designers, engineers, contractors, tenants, and occupants. The rest of the document provides an overview of the green building movement, benefits of green buildings like energy and water savings, and an introduction to LEED certification including the rating system, prerequisites and credits.
BIM models were used for constructability reviews on several projects to identify issues, resolve discrepancies, and develop alternative details. This allowed teams to fix problems virtually before construction, eliminating rework, reducing costs and delays. Examples showed how virtual mockups supported design coordination and clarified complex assemblies through collaborative problem solving.
The document summarizes Exergy's core team and the services they provide related to carbon reduction and sustainability. The core team includes experts in business strategy, carbon clean technology, carbon advisory, carbon finance, and carbon branding. They offer services such as carbon footprinting, sustainability reporting, green supply chain management, CDM project facilitation, carbon trading, green development assistance, and green marketing.
The document discusses three pillars of climate change governance: governments, institutions, and markets. It states that when one pillar fails, the others can compensate and the system aims to self-correct over time. However, the document also notes there are consistent failures in governance due to issues with participation, sophistication, representation, credibility, transparency, and pricing mechanisms in these pillars. Specific examples of market failures in India's power, steel, and cement industries are provided. The document concludes by outlining the multi-step process for clean development mechanism projects.

Buildings account for around 40% of global CO2 emissions and use 70-80% of all electricity. To meet climate targets, building energy use must decrease 77% by 2050. The EEB coalition was formed to transform the building sector to consume zero net energy through improved design, construction, and use. Initial reports found low awareness of buildings' environmental impacts and a fragmented industry without clear leadership on energy efficiency. The EEB produced recommendations and roadmaps to guide policy and the market toward more sustainable buildings. Key results showed buildings have great potential to reduce emissions but will require involvement from all actors and investment, as the costs of inaction will be greater. The EEB Manifesto calls on members to set goals and report progress

This document describes the development of a knowledge sharing platform called MEGS-KT for continuing professional development in the energy sector. Research included interviews and surveys with SMEs which identified needs like accessing funding, technical knowledge, and finding work. A taxonomy was created to map the sector. A community of practice was built including fellow lectures, LinkedIn, and Twitter. The solution created was an online platform for sharing resources and a demonstrator was developed. Benefits included linking SMEs to university research and establishing a long-term community for knowledge sharing.

How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?
This talk will cover ScyllaDB Architecture from the cluster-level view and zoom in on data distribution and internal node architecture. In the process, we will learn the secret sauce used to get ScyllaDB's high availability and superior performance. We will also touch on the upcoming changes to ScyllaDB architecture, moving to strongly consistent metadata and tablets.
Essentials of Automations: Exploring Attributes & Automation ParametersSafe Software
Building automations in FME Flow can save time, money, and help businesses scale by eliminating data silos and providing data to stakeholders in real-time. One essential component to orchestrating complex automations is the use of attributes & automation parameters (both formerly known as “keys”). In fact, it’s unlikely you’ll ever build an Automation without using these components, but what exactly are they?
Attributes & automation parameters enable the automation author to pass data values from one automation component to the next. During this webinar, our FME Flow Specialists will cover leveraging the three types of these output attributes & parameters in FME Flow: Event, Custom, and Automation. As a bonus, they’ll also be making use of the Split-Merge Block functionality.
You’ll leave this webinar with a better understanding of how to maximize the potential of automations by making use of attributes & automation parameters, with the ultimate goal of setting your enterprise integration workflows up on autopilot.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

The typical problem in product engineering is not bad strategy, so much as “no strategy”. This leads to confusion, lack of motivation, and incoherent action. The next time you look for a strategy and find an empty space, instead of waiting for it to be filled, I will show you how to fill it in yourself. If you’re wrong, it forces a correction. If you’re right, it helps create focus. I’ll share how I’ve approached this in the past, both what works and lessons for what didn’t work so well.
