Open education practices can spread in several ways, including stealth adoptions by individual faculty, infection from one faculty or course to another, committee adoption across departments or institutions, sanctioned exceptional adoption for specific situations, adoption by instructional developers for new courses, inter-institutional adoption between colleges and universities, creation and self-adoption of new open practices, and lone adoption by individuals. These various pathways can inform efforts to spearhead and support innovations at post-secondary institutions.
