How did you use media technology
in the construction, research,
planning and evaluation stages?
Evaluation Q4
Research
For the majority of the research area of my project I
used the internet to learn more about the genre and the
way short film works. For the more in-depth research
specific to my film, I created a questionnaire on survey
monkey.
When analysing this information, I created charts on
Infogram – an off-shoot of Prezi – that made interesting
infographics.
Furthermore, YouTube provided me with wealth of ideas
by watching other short films and film breakdowns. I
also got ideas for camerawork and costumes from tech
channels. The same can be said for the likes of
Empire.com in which I was able to look up various types
of thrillers and how they were received by audiences
and critics.
Planning
A lot of the planning stages were handwritten/drawn and then type
afterwards. However, there were some parts that I used technology for.
When initially location scouting, I used google maps to find areas that I
though would suit my theme, and then later took photos.
Google maps (Above)
Photo (Below)
I used my phone for the location scouting
pictures, and also to take pictures of my
storyboards to put on my blog.
In addition, I also
used my phone to
write down ideas for
my film that I got
when I was out and a
to look up small
things.
I also used a spot lamp
similar to this to test
lighting in areas and see
what would look best
Filming
For the filming, I used
a canon 1300d.
I used this to film all
my scenes.
I also used this camera
to take the photos for
both my poster and
article too.
In most shots, I
implemented a tripod
to keep the camera
steady. I also used the
various points of
articulation to create
canted angles and low
shots
I also used a
tripod similar to
this gorilla tripod
to film shots on
counter or low
shots
For the in-car shots, I used my
friends Hyundai i10. This
combined with the tripod
made for all the backseat
shots, and all the shots taken
from outside of the front
widows; done by me leaning
out the back window with the
camera attached to the tripod.
I used the spot lamp to
create moodier light in
the bedroom shots and to
shed light on the
characters in the shots
outside of the bedroom.
Editing (film)
I used premiere
pro for the
entirety of my
editing process.
The main thing I altered with my footage was the
lighting and colour. I did this by lowering the
exposure, upping the contrast and dropping the
temperature to create the thriller look and take
away the happy family looking home
In this scene, I added a red filter by
increasing the tint towards the pink
end. This represented Chris’ anger and
the horror of the scene.
I also added a filter in this scene (the
upstairs action) but this time it was
black and white. This is a common
convention of thrillers and I emulated
it by completely lowering the
saturation
In multiple parts of
the film, the sound
came out poorly
and I had to rectify
this. I downloaded
soundbites from
YouTube and
placed them in to
match the action
they sounded for –
this can be seen
circled above
In this shot below, I
made the shot
larger so it didn’t
quite fit the frame,
cutting out
unnecessary parts.
Furthermore, I
modulated the
sound to create a
police scanner
effect using the
equaliser in Prem
Pro
Poster
I used
photoshop to
create my
poster.
I used the selection
tool to cut out the
shape of Jamie and
place him in the
centre of the
poster.
I also darkened his
trousers as they
appeared to glow
on the black
background.
I used the same
selection tool to
cut out the gun
from a separate
picture. I then put
the layer behind
Jamie and lowered
the opacity to
about 60 %
I took an image of smoke
from google then removed
the background of it on
Powerpoint. After this I
placed it behind the gun’s
layer on Photoshop. To
counter the whiteness of it,
I lowered the opacity to
about 40% then used the
above stamp tool to give it
a less angled finish.
I used the gradient tool to create a
red-hue from the bottom of the
poster, furthering the colour
scheme’s brand continuity.
For the most
realistic feel, I
added the
logos of film 4
and youtube
as well as
using the
SteelTongs
font to create
an accurate
looking billing
block text.
Article
I used Indesign to
create my article
to promote my
film.
I changed the font, which I got
from the site dafont, to be the
same as the into of the film
and the title of poster, pushing
brand continuity.
I used the rectangle tool both to create
the white border surrounding the article,
and to create the underlined effect of the
introductive title, a common staple of
review magazines.
I used the type tool to
create the drop caps
effect at the start of the
main body of my article.
This is the way most
professional reviews or
colums are presented.
To create the pull
quote, I simply
increased the text
size, italicised it
and changed the
colour to blue.
Here you can see I used the
same picture as the
background of the article as I
did for the main image in the
poster. This emphasises the
connection between the two,
the importance of Jamie as
the main character and that
all important brand continuity
