How did you attract/
address your audience?
By Madison Flaherty
Our production is certificated 12 therefore, our primary
audience are pre-teens and teenagers between the ages of
12 and 16. We chose this audience because our production
doesn’t contain much violence, or swearing and looking at
other action films with a similar sort of idea to ours, we
saw that they were certified 12 so we felt that was
appropriate for ours too.
During Pre Production we conducted multiple surveys on Survey Monkey and polls on Twitter asking things to
relatable to the idea of our production and giving them a chance to impact what went into it our production and
what got cut out.
By doing these surveys it helped the audience connect and feel apart of the production even when it was in the pre
production stage which ultimately would of helped when coming to marketing and distribution.
Surveys
Font and TitleWhen we first came up with our name, with inspiration
from a classmate; we really liked it because it was catchy
and easy to remember. We didn’t realize how similar to
“Maze Runner” it was until a bit later. We decided to stick
with this name and use the similarity to our advantage.
Taking the Maze Runner Resemblance on board me and Ronan (fellow group member)
discussed that we could use the same font that Maze Runner does, as the font itself is simple
and doesn't draw too much attention away from a shot it overlays but at the same time you
can't miss it, by doing this we would make the audience think of the Maze Runner as they
see the name and the font (Intertextuality) which would mean that they would instantly
associate our production with theirs causing them to want to watch or check it out to see if
it's as good. Also, the Maze Runner has a similar/close target audience as we do which helps
us with the fact that they also thought this font would appeal to the audience.
Molrey’s female gaze is when female will view males in as sex object or in the
case of our production masculine.
Typically in an action film men are seen as strong and brave which usually
makes females view them as the sex objects but with our production being a
12 that’s not what we aimed for, we aimed for something completely
different. As strong as the male in our production was they were still
challenged and beaten by the female which ultimately would result in Male
gaze, the males viewing the females as sex objects but in our case powerful.
This would attract both males and females as it appeals to both and would
possibly have them interested about the concept of the female being more
powerful then the male as that is typical of action films.
Molrey’s Female/Male Gaze
Genre Conventions
One of the biggest conventions of an action film are weapons and explosions.
We didn’t have explosions in our production but we did have guns followed by
another conventions, a fast paced fight scene involved a set-back. All of these
causing adrenaline and tension within the audience which many films such as,
Kick Ass, Maze Runner etc. all do.
SoundDuring our surveys and polls we asked what our target audience felt was one of the most important things in an action
film and they said an intense soundtrack. Doing some sound research I found that a soundtrack was most effective
when it wasn’t one continuous, repeated tune but picked up during action and was calmer when there wasn’t any. So
taking things like that in mind I used them to attract or keep the audience attracted to the production.
As I did some textual analysis I did noticed that in most of them would have an intense scene that was building to something and then
when someone shot a gun/arrow/weapon at someone the screen would go black keeping the audience wondering and on the edge of
their seat just for a few seconds. As I was the editor I didn’t to use this in our production.
As the frame went black the soundtrack stopped and their was just silence adding to the anticipation and keeping the
audience waiting with a seconds long cliff hanger.
