HOW DID PEOPLE IN EARLY
CIVILISATIONS TELL THE TIME
             1
Devices that early civilisations used
           to tell the time

• Sundial

• Water Clock

• Candle Clocks

• Incense Clocks

                     2
HOW DOES IT WORK

       3
Candle Clock
•A candle clock has
consistent spaced
markings on it (or behind
it). When it is burned the
candle becomes lower and
lower and where the top
of the candle is at any
given point tells the time,
how many hours have
passed or how long to go.

                              4
Water Clock

• Works similar to a candle clock. A vessel is filled with water
at the bottom of the vessel you cut avery small whole. On
the vessel there must be markings which show how much
time has passed, how long it has been or how long to go.

                             5
Incense Clocks
• Incense clocks are sticks
 calibrated with known
 burning rates. The sticks are
marked and at a set time a
 weight will drop onto a
 gong. The sound signifies a
 certain period of time has
 past. These clocks are
 believed to have originated
 in India but were practically
 first used in China. The
 clocks are usually in
 decorative trays. 6
Sundial
•A sundial is like a shadow clock. The sun hits the tall
structure in the middle of the clock which casts a shadow on
to the dial. There are marking on the dial to tell what time it
is. Where the shadow meets the sun is the point which shows
the time.
