causing bacteria.
EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS USED IN
CLEANING PREMISES
Learning Objective:
At the end of this module the trainees are able to:
• Identify the different equipment used in cleaning premises
• Identify the different materials used in cleaning premises
Vacuum Cleaner It is used to eliminate loose soil
and dust particles from carpet
surfaces furniture’s and even
the hard surfaces.
The dirt is collected by either a
dust bag or a cyclone for later
disposal. Vacuum cleaners,
which are used in homes as
well as in industry, exist in a
variety of sizes and models—
small battery-operated hand-
held devices, domestic central
vacuum cleaners,
Floor Polisher
A floor polisher or rotary floor
machine is an electrical
appliance that is used to clean and
maintain non-carpeted floors, such
as hardwood, marble, tile or
linoleum. It is also known as
a floor burnisher if it is a high
speed floor buffer with a pad that
rotates at over 1000 RPM.
Carpet Sweeper A carpet sweeper typically
consists of a small box. The base
of the box has rollers and
brushes, connected by a belt or
gears. There is also a container
for dirt. The arrangement is such
that when pushed along a floor
the rollers turn and force the
brushes to rotate. The brushes
sweep dirt and dust from the floor
into the container. Carpet
sweepers frequently have a
height adjustment that enables
them to work on different lengths
of carpet, or bare floors.
Hydro Vacuum
Hydro vacuum is used for wet
and dry surfaces. It is used in
absorbing water in flooded or
wet surfaces.
Carpet Extractor
Carpet extractor is designed
for dry foam shampooing
carpets. It removes dirt that
sticks to or penetrate into
carpet layers
Room boy’s cart
Used in stocking supplies and
chemicals so as to make
cleaning easier and faster
MATERIALS USED IN CLEANING PREMISES ‘
Scouring Pads Green: for scrubbing
only
White: for cleaning
painted surfaces,
mirrors marble and
porcelain
Always make sure
that the pads are wet
before using

brush is not left
immersed in
cleaning water for
a long time
Toilet bowl brush Used in cleaning
toilet bowl
Toilet brush
should be kept
after use in the
storeroom by

remove excessive
water from the
surface and corners.
It is also speeds up
the drying process
Make sure that the
rubber strips are
supple. Have it
replaced the moment
it turn and bristle
Ceiling brooms
Use this broom to
remove cobwebs
in the ceiling
Clean the bristles
of the broom after
the end of shift
Oilers
Applied in the
hinges of the doors
to prevent from
squeaking
Used sparingly,
when spill into floor
it can cause stain
Tongs Used in picking up
cigarette butts found
on ashtrays
Used to prevent
from hands to have
contact with dirt that
may cause
contamination
Trash bags This is used as an
under liner of the
garbage containers
for wet garbage does
not penetrate to the
corners of the
container
Bags should always

disposed in order to
avoid spread of foul
odor
Soft broom Used in sweeping Used in soft
surfaces to
remove dirt
Sponges Used in cleaning
fine surfaces
Wash and rinse
after use
Buckets Buckets used in
cleaning floor
walls together
with the mop
Buckets must be
emptied after use
Insect Sprayer Used for fumigation
so as to eliminate
pest and mosquitoes
Spray the area with
the windows and
doors closed and
leave it for 15
minutes
IDENTIFYING CORRECT CHEMICALS,
EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES FOR CLEANING
THE ROOM
Learning Objective:
At the end of this module the trainees are able to:
• Identify the different chemicals used in Housekeeping
• Identify the different equipment used in Housekeeping
• Identify the procedures in cleaning the room
Wood polish To polish wood
surface leather and
imitation-leather
surfaces
Spray it sparingly
on even surface
Insecticides To be used in
fumigation and
to eliminate
insects and
pests
In as much as
the chemicals
are toxic, avoid
spraying unto
the food
containers and
food items.
Remove food
within affected
areas during
fumigation
Methylated Spirits It is a chemical used
for polishing all
glass surfaces such
as mirrors, windows
etc.
This chemical is
highly flammable
and must never be
used in the near fire
or flame.
Air Freshener To be sprayed in
the room to
remove foul odor
in the
guestrooms,
comfort rooms or
in any area with
foul odor
Use sparingly
Carpet Stain
Remover like
atomizer
Use to remove stain
or spot on carpets
See procedures on
spot removal
Disinfectant like Lysol
together with sprayer
It is used to disinfect
toilet bowls, urinals, sink
and other areas that are
most vulnerable to
bacterial contamination
Dilution will depend on the degree of
disinfection. The average is one cup of
Lysol of one gallon of water
Pure Lysol may be applied to urinals
and toilet bowls since these areas
already contain water
Use brush to clean and disinfect bowls
and urinals then rinse afterwards. For
others surfaces, apply with cloth or
mop wipe surfaces rince and dry.
When using Lysol in atomizer, apply
the chemical to the surface, wipe with
damp cloth or wet brush, then rinse dry
Metal Polish To be used for
polishing brush
copper and metal
surfaces
Apply small amount
on cleaning towel
and rub metal
surfaces until
tarnishes will
disappear. Remove
immediately and
remove leftover
polish with hot
water.
Lacquer Paint and
Thinner
Use this chemical
remove copper and
meal surfaces
Apply with a cleaning
towel or scouring pad
until the left covers are
removed. Then pat dry
and polish the surface.
Since the solution is
highly concentrated,
light spraying is
sufficient to be able to
economize.
Muriatic Acid To be sued only for
removing cement
plastic remains
from floors
Tjis is not advisable
for toilet bowls
since it is very
strong and it can
damage the tiles.
Dilution will depend
on the thickness of
cement or plastic
remains
Wax stripper Formulated to
break up loosen
and strip off tough
old waxes
See Stripping
Procedures
Degreaser Used to remove
grease, oil, dirt,
carbon ink ,
mildews, soils
and waxes
See Stripping
Procedures
Polymer sealer A non buffable wax
that is highly
recommended for
wooden floors
See Floor Polishing
Solvent wax A kerosene
wax used for
wooden floors
See Polishing
Procedures
Paste wax For polishing
stone floors,
wood and
resilient floors
See Polishing
Procedures
Drain cleaners to expedite
draining of clog
See Polishing
Procedures
