• House style is a company’s preferred way of presenting their magazines.
This also controls the general layout of the magazine. A house style will
usually have preferred rules which affects font types used, the images,
typography, headers, footers and other things. Even where the barcode
goes. Usually, magazines will only use a selected few font types and they
will be repeated for different things. For example, the masthead would be
the same font throughout, and the cover lines may have a different font to
the masthead but will be used consistently throughout issues. The fonts
will usually not be changed for very long periods of time because it lets
readers and the audience know that this is that company’s magazine
because it will be how they usually present their magazines. The headings
will also tend to be in a different font style as opposed to the cover lines
and masthead but will still be consistent for an extensive time period. On
the other hand, this doesn’t always apply to colour schemes because on
some magazines, the colour scheme will differ depending on the colour of
the main image. So for example the main image may be orange, therefore
the colour of the masthead and/or cover lines will also be orange to
match.
