JAMESTOWN, R.I. — Inspired by 16th­century Japanese country houses, Charles
and Teresa Ritter's home at 204 Intrepid Lane in East Passage Estates was custom
built in 1989 with a design by Haiku Houses of California.

The Ritters are from western New York, but Charles Ritter's Rhode Island
connections date to his days at Brown University. He worked for many years in
product engineering, and he often traveled in Japan for work in the 1980s. He and
his wife bought their house lot in 1986 and started planning the construction of
their home. The house is located on a two­acre lot at the intersection of Intrepid
Lane and America Way.
America Way is the main road in East Passage Estates, and it connects the
neighborhood to East Shore Road and North Main Road. The neighborhood is a
quiet one. Conservation land borders the northern side, and land­trust farmland is
to the south.
From Intrepid Lane, walking trails lead to the Rainbow Ponds, two man­made
ponds owned by the neighborhood association. The ponds provide a water supply
for the Fire Department in the northern end of the island.
The Ritters' house is almost hidden from the street view by a massive weeping
copper beech tree that stands in front of the house. The pebbled driveway entrance
is on America Way and leads to the two­car integral garage, an entrance to the first
level of the home, and a stairway to the wraparound deck on the second story of
the house.
This deck wraps around the entire second story. The second level is the main living
area of the house, and includes the open kitchen, living and dining areas, three

bedrooms and two full bathrooms. The living room has a vaulted ceiling with large
skylights, and views of the greenery surrounding the home are visible from every
room. The living room also has a wood­burning fireplace made of soapstone,
which Ritter said is three times as effective at holding heat as cast iron.
Redwood was used extensively in the house, which features 16­inch pillars,
beamed ceilings, and multiple large windows, including a number of skylights.
Charles Ritter said that at one time, he planned to turn the ground level of the
house (there is no basement) into a living space for his mother, but the first floor
today includes a study area with a desk, a family room, and a full bathroom, in
addition to storage and home utility areas. The laundry room is on the second
floor.
The master bedroom suite and another home office take up the top level. The
master bedroom walls are lined with built­in bookshelves and closets, with hidden
storage areas located behind a bookshelf that opens like a door. Even more built­in
book shelves line a walkway from the master bedroom to the office. Both of these
areas also have vaulted ceilings with skylights. The master bathroom has a large
jetted bathtub.
The Ritters raised their family in Jamestown, but they also own a home in Florida.
They said they plan to live there year­round once their Jamestown house is sold.
