Why Give Homework?
Improve your child’s thinking and memory Help your child develop good study skills Teach your child to work independently Teach your child to take responsibility for his or her own work Practice and review for quizzes and tests
To help students understand and review the work that has been covered in class To see whether students understand the lesson To help students explore subjects more fully than classroom time permits Extend learning by applying new skills to new situations To preview vocabulary and content before activities  or discussions done in class
How much time should be spent each night on  Homework?
Children in grades 3-6 can handle 30 - 60 minutes a day In middle school, the amount of homework will vary by subject. Most middle school children will also have long-term projects, such as research papers and science fair projects, that may have deadlines weeks away.
How can you help your child with homework?
Check your child’s agenda to see if his or her homework is complete Assume that your child will have studying to do every night  Help your child set daily routines to support what he or she is learning Teachers need to see where your child is having trouble. Allow them to make mistakes on homework assignments
Study Tips and Hints
Fifth grade is a time to explore. Children need to try different study strategies in order to find the right fit. It may take awhile for your child to find his or her particular learning style and to figure out what works best for him or her. Exploration

You will have a drop down menu on you Bookmarks Toolbar
You will use the folder you made on you Bookmarks Toolbar to access your child’s weekly homework
Your child should organize his or her binder on a weekly basis.
If your child is stuck on something, we are  available during Advisory and before school.  !!!HELP!!!
What can parents do if they notice frustration or problems?
Parent Toolkit  What tools do I have to help my child? Use tools like:  Discovery Streaming ,  My Science Online , and  phschool.com Click the Learning Center  link for new ideas and  information on ideas to help your child. Call or make an appointment with The Learning Center  for other options  to improve your child’s academic success
